Chapter 7 - The Developer's Secret Deal

The troopers moved swiftly. Within three minutes, Chloe was in handcuffs, her expensive trench coat rumpled, weeping genuine, panicked tears as she was escorted out of the French doors.
"Clara! Please! Tell them it's a misunderstanding!" she wailed, her makeup running down her face in dark streaks. "Mom and Dad will kill me! Tell them I was just coming to borrow something! Clara!"
I watched in silence as the cruiser doors slammed shut, sealing her inside.
By sunrise, the front gate had become a battleground. Richard and Lydia arrived in a screeching frenzy, having received the call from the county jail where Chloe had been booked for first-degree residential burglary and criminal trespass.
Richard slammed his car into the reinforced security gate, denting his bumper. He hopped out of the vehicle, his shirt untucked, looking completely unhinged. Lydia was right behind him, screaming hysterically at the two private security guards Mr. Vance had posted at the entrance.
"You arrested my baby girl!" Lydia shrieked, clutching the iron bars of the gate. "She’s twenty years old! Her life will be ruined! Let us in, you monsters!"
Mr. Vance arrived at seven-thirty, carrying a fresh leather briefcase and a warm paper cup of coffee for me. He walked past the screaming couple without acknowledging their presence, nodding respectfully to the guards who unlocked the pedestrian gate to let him through.
"Chloe is currently in holding at the central precinct," Mr. Vance informed me as we walked up the porch steps. "The magistrate set bail at fifty thousand dollars due to the nighttime felony breaking and entering charge. Richard tried to post his credit cards, but every single one was declined."
"They're bankrupt," I said, leaning against the porch railing. "Chloe said Richard met with Julian Sterling last night. She mentioned an eminent domain claim on the mineral rights."
Mr. Vance stopped on the porch, his eyes narrowing behind his glasses. "So, Richard finally played his desperate hand. Julian Sterling is the CEO of Apex Energy. A ruthless man, but he is not a fool. If Richard met with Sterling, it means Richard took something from him."
"What do you mean?"
"Five years ago," Mr. Vance explained, leaning in, "Apex Energy tried to push a municipal pipeline across the county border. Arthur discovered that Richard had signed a fraudulent letter of intent claiming to be the power of attorney for Arthur’s estate. In exchange, Richard accepted a five-hundred-thousand-dollar personal advance loan from Sterling’s private investment fund, promising to deliver the deed upon Arthur’s death."
The magnitude of Richard’s treachery hit me like a physical blow. "He sold Grandpa’s land while Grandpa was still alive."
"Precisely," Mr. Vance said. "And now Arthur is dead, the will has been executed in your favor, and Sterling wants either the land or his half-million dollars back immediately. If Richard cannot deliver Oakridge, Sterling will destroy him in court and send him to federal prison for wire fraud."
Before I could process the depth of my father’s depravity, a third vehicle approached the estate’s driveway.
It wasn't a police car or a cheap rental. It was a midnight-black Maybach with tinted windows, purring smoothly along the gravel road. The Maybach parked directly behind Richard’s dented sedan.
A chauffeur stepped out, opening the rear passenger door.
A tall, silver-haired man in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit stepped out. He was in his late fifties, carrying an aura of absolute corporate dominance that made Richard and Lydia shrink back like terrified dogs.
