Chapter 4 - The Trap Snaps Shut

Eleanor’s lips parted, but no sound came out.
"You didn't..." Eleanor whispered, her gaze darting toward the two plainclothes agents standing near the exit. "Chloe wouldn't do that. She doesn't even know your military ID number!"
"She didn't," I agreed softly. "You did."
Eleanor flinched as though I had struck her.
"When Dad died," I continued, "you went through his personal safe before the casualty assistance officer could inventory it. You took his deployment journals. You took his personnel files. You thought you found the master key to everything he left behind. And when Chloe came crying to you about loan sharks and gambling debts, you decided to use my name to unlock the vault."
"Natalie, stop this!" Eleanor begged, the haughty matriarch completely crumbling into a frantic, cornered animal. "We are your family! You cannot do this to your own mother! What will people say? Look at who is watching!"
"The people watching," Ethan said, his voice cutting through her panic like a razor, "are senior leaders of the military branch your late husband served with distinction. They are seeing that General Carter's widow and youngest daughter are guilty of wire fraud, identity theft against an active-duty officer, and attempted theft of United States military survivor funds."
"I was going to pay it back!" Chloe wailed, breaking down completely, sliding down the marble pillar until she was crumpled on the floor among her spilled makeup and scattered papers. "Mom said Natalie would never check! She said Natalie was just a pencil pusher who wouldn't notice a diversion from the secondary account! Mom told me to sign the paper!"
"Chloe, shut your mouth!" Eleanor screamed, lunging toward her younger daughter not with affection, but with raw fury. "Shut up! You idiot, shut up!"
Before Eleanor could reach Chloe, one of the plainclothes CID agents stepped smoothly between them, his badge flashing under the chandelier.
"Eleanor Carter? I’m Special Agent Harris, Army CID. Step back."
"Get out of my way!" Eleanor raged, losing whatever shred of sanity she had left. "Do you know who my husband was? He was General Robert Carter! He had more medals than this entire room combined! You cannot arrest me!"
"Your husband was an honorable man," General Sterling said, his voice thick with sorrow and disgust. "Which makes your betrayal of his daughter all the more repulsive. Agent Harris, do your duty."
Agent Harris produced a pair of stainless steel handcuffs. The metallic click echoed across the silent room.
"Eleanor Carter, you are being detained pursuant to a federal warrant for conspiracy to commit grand larceny, wire fraud, and forgery involving Department of Defense assets. You have the right to remain silent."
"No! No, this is an engagement party!" Eleanor shrieked as Harris expertly pulled her arms behind her back. The diamonds on her fingers clicked against the steel cuffs. "Natalie, tell them to stop! Tell Ethan to stop them! Natalie!"

I watched her, completely unmoving. The sting on my cheek had settled into a dull, rhythmic throb, a physical reminder of twenty-eight years of emotional subjugation that had officially ended the moment her hand made contact with my face.
"You told me earlier that I owed my family, Mom," I said quietly, as Agent Harris began guiding her toward the side entrance. "You were right. I owed Dad the truth. And I owed myself my freedom."
