Chapter 6 - The Unmasking

By Wednesday afternoon, the fortress had turned into an offensive siege.

Mark and I sat in the high-rise conference room of Cole & Associates in downtown Atlanta. The room smelled of polished mahogany and expensive espresso. Across the glass table sat David Miller, Maya’s father.

David had driven six hours through the night from Charlotte the moment Harrison Cole had contacted his legal team. He sat with his rough, calloused hands clasped on the table, wearing a clean flannel shirt and jeans. He looked like an honest man who had been pushed through a meat grinder for six years.

"I didn't know," David said, his voice thick with unshed tears as he looked over the bank statements Mark had provided. "Rachel, I swear to you on my mother's grave, I had no idea Jenna was telling everyone I wasn't paying. I sent eighteen hundred dollars every month on the first. I worked seventy-hour weeks on industrial sites so Maya could have braces, so she could go to art camp, so she could have a college fund."

"We know, David," I said gently, pushing a box of tissues across the table toward him. "Jenna and my mother intercepted everything. They used your money to fund a fake lifestyle."

David rubbed his face with both hands, his shoulders shaking. "When I saw that picture on Facebook... Maya sitting on that cold floor in Aspen with that cheap paper bag, while Jenna was wearing a three-thousand-dollar jacket... I felt like my soul was being ripped out. My little girl. My poor little girl."

Harrison Cole entered the room, holding two heavy blue-backed legal files. He dropped them onto the table with a satisfying thud.

"Good news travels fast," Harrison said, loosening his silk tie. "The Pitkin County DA reviewed the concierge audio log and the credit card authorization forms. Because the disputed amount exceeds five thousand dollars, it falls under Class 4 Felony Theft and Identity Fraud in the State of Colorado. They've issued an arrest warrant for Diane Miller and Jenna Miller."

David looked up, his jaw dropping. "A warrant?"

"Furthermore," Harrison continued, looking at David, "we’ve coordinated with your North Carolina attorney. We filed an emergency ex parte motion for immediate temporary custody of Maya based on parental alienation, financial fraud, and imminent risk of criminal arrest of the custodial parent. The Mecklenburg County judge signed it two hours ago."

"Can I get her?" David asked, his voice trembling with hope. "Can I go get my daughter right now?"

"We have a Georgia sheriff's deputy meeting us at your in-laws' home in forty-five minutes to execute the custody order," Harrison said, checking his watch. "Rachel, Mark... you don't have to be there."

I looked at Mark. He held my gaze, offering neither pressure nor objection. He was letting me decide how the final chapter of my past would be written.

"I have to go," I said. "Not for Diane. Not for Jenna. For Maya. Maya needs to see someone she loves who isn't screaming."
