Chapter 4 - The Golden Child's Secret

"Rachel," my father’s voice was cracked, hollowed out, sounding like dust blowing across an empty field. "Take it down. Please. I'm begging you. Take it down."

I leaned against the kitchen counter, looking at the dark reflection of myself in the window. "Is Mom there, Dad?"

"She's in the bedroom," he whispered. I could hear the faint, muffled sounds of Diane screaming in the background of their house, hurling objects against the wall. "Rachel, your aunt Susan saw the post. Pastor Thomas called our house twenty minutes ago. The entire deacon board has seen the receipts. Diane is... she’s hysterical."

"Did she tell Pastor Thomas how she spent four thousand dollars on vintage champagne while calling Ellie selfish, Dad?"

"Rachel, you don't understand!" my father cried, his voice breaking into genuine sobs. "You don't know what's happening here! You think this is about an iPad? You think this is about a ski jacket?"

Mark looked up from his laptop, catching my eye. He reached over and pressed the record button on his phone, placing it next to mine on speaker.

"Then tell me what it's about, Dad," I said softly. "Because from where I'm sitting, you let your wife and your other daughter treat my family like an ATM and my daughter like a second-class citizen."

"Jenna is being sued, Rachel!" Robert blurted out, the secret finally tearing through his chest. "She's being sued for child support fraud!"

I froze. "What?"

"David found out," Robert wept.

David was Maya’s father. He and Jenna had split when Maya was barely two years old. David was a quiet, hardworking commercial electrician who had moved two states away to North Carolina. For the last six years, Jenna had painted David as a deadbeat monster who never paid a dime, who abandoned his daughter, who forced poor Jenna to live as a struggling single mother on Diane and Robert's charity.

"What did David find out, Dad?" Mark asked, stepping into the conversation.

Robert gasped, realizing Mark was listening, but he was too broken to backtrack. "David... David hasn't missed a single child support payment in six years. He's been paying $1,800 a month directly into a court-monitored trust, plus paying for Maya's private health insurance and an education fund."

My stomach turned completely hollow. "$1,800 a month? Jenna hasn't worked a real job since Maya was born! She lives in your guest house! She told everyone David was three years behind!"

"Jenna got access to the account through a forged power of attorney three years ago," Robert confessed, his voice barely a rasp. "She... she and your mother set up an LLC. An 'e-commerce boutique.' They took out a merchant loan using the child support trust as collateral. They lost everything in some overseas cosmetic scheme. Over eighty thousand dollars, Rachel. David got an audit through the state court last month. He’s taking Jenna to court on felony embezzlement charges next Tuesday."

The room seemed to spin. The pieces of the puzzle that had never fit suddenly clicked together with sickening precision.

The constant emergencies. The sudden need for cash. The way Diane always shielded Jenna from the slightest financial responsibility. The reason Diane was so desperate for Maya to have Ellie's iPad, why she demanded the luxury ski clothes—she was trying to prop up the fantasy of Jenna’s affluent motherhood before David’s legal team descended on them.

"They needed Mark to pay the Aspen folio," Robert whispered, "because if the resort filed a police report for retail fraud, the district attorney would notify the North Carolina court, and Jenna would lose Maya instantly. That's why your mother panicked. That's why she demanded Ellie give Maya the iPad—she wanted to take photos of Maya with high-end tech and ski gear to show the custody evaluator that Maya had an 'abundant lifestyle' with her mother."

"You used my daughter," I whispered, the sheer depravity of it stealing the breath from my lungs. "You and Mom tried to psychologically break Ellie so Jenna could stage a photo op for a custody hearing to cover up felony fraud?"

"I didn't know about the iPad plan until it happened, Rachel, I swear to God!" Robert sobbed. "Your mother handles everything! She said Mark had millions, that Mark wouldn't care about a few thousand dollars, that we had to save Jenna from prison!"

"And what about Ellie, Dad?" I screamed, tears finally erupting from my eyes. "What about my child? Did you care when Diane told her she wasn't her grandmother anymore? Did you care when Ellie sat at that table shaking because she thought she had ruined your vacation?"

Robert had no answer. Only ragged, pathetic breathing filled the line.

"Dad," I said, wiping my face with the back of my hand, my voice turning to absolute ice. "Listen to me very carefully. If you or Diane ever come within one hundred yards of Ellie again, I won't just let David handle Jenna. I will hand the Aspen resort's surveillance footage, the text messages, and this recorded confession directly to the Pitkin County Sheriff and David’s attorney."

"Rachel, please—"

"Goodbye, Dad."

I hung up.

Mark sat beside me, wrapping his strong arms around me as I collapsed against his chest. I cried for the girl I used to be, who thought if she just brought home straight A's, Diane would smile at her. I cried for my little niece Maya, who was trapped in a web of deceit spun by her own mother and grandmother.

"Call David," Mark said softly against my hair.

I pulled back, looking at him. "David?"

May you like

"David is Maya's father," Mark said, his eyes steady with moral resolve. "He has been fighting in the dark for six years. It's time someone gave him the light."
