Chapter 8 - The Shadow Creditor

I lunged across the desk and hit the speakerphone button myself.
"Speak," I commanded.
A man's voice, smooth, deep, and accented with a clipped European cadence, drifted through the room. It was terrifyingly calm, devoid of all emotion.
"Good evening, Vance. I see on my administrative terminal that the conveyance for parcel zero-four-eight-eight-three-one has encountered an administrative error. I am currently looking at a federal compliance lock placed at twenty-one hundred hours."
Vance swallowed hard, leaning toward the mic. "Mr. Thorne... Julian. There’s been a complication. The deed... the deed had an unrecorded prior trust attached to it. Henry Mercer’s original will—"
"I don't care about Henry Mercer's will, Vance," Julian Thorne interrupted, his tone chillingly flat. "And I certainly do not care about Lydia Mercer's family disputes. The contract specifies clear title delivery by midnight, November fourteenth. It is currently eleven-fifteen."
"Julian, please," Lydia cried out, scrambling toward the phone. "It’s my son! My son and his wife have interfered with the registry! Give me forty-eight hours! I will have the court clear the injunction!"
"Ah, Mrs. Mercer," Thorne’s voice hummed with quiet mockery. "You sound distressed. But you misunderstand how my firm operates. We do not grant forty-eight hours to defaulting debtors. My contractors are already positioned outside the Carteret County perimeter."
Mateo’s head snapped up. "What contractors?"
"Who is that?" Thorne inquired smoothly.
"I am Mateo Alvarez," my father said, leaning over the phone with absolute authority. "The legal owner of that land. If you have people on my property, you tell them to back off right now before I call the Carteret County Sheriff."
Thorne chuckled softly—a dry, rattling sound. "Mr. Alvarez. How quaint. You rely on local deputies in a county where my firm just funded the construction of their new municipal harbor. By the time any deputy arrives to verify your twenty-five-year-old scrap of paper, my excavators will have broken ground on the dry-dock foundations. Possession, Mr. Alvarez, is nine-tenths of the law. Once the wetlands are cleared and the concrete is poured, no judge in North Carolina will order it torn down. They will simply award you a monetary settlement... which Mrs. Mercer will be completely unable to pay."
Cole slammed his fist onto the mahogany desk, splintering the polished wood trim. "Thorne! If you touch a single pine tree on that marsh, I will tear your corporate shell companies apart brick by brick!"
"You have forty-five minutes to clear the federal freeze, Mrs. Alvarez," Thorne said, ignoring Cole completely. "If the hold is not lifted by midnight, my heavy machinery begins demolition of the old boatyard structures. Have a good evening."
The line went dead.
Silence hung heavy in the room, suffocating and thick.
"The boatyard..." Mateo whispered, his hand going to his chest. "Sofia's workshop... the original timber frame Henry and I built... it's all still standing out there."
"They're going to bulldoze it," Cole said, his jaw tightening into iron. "To create facts on the ground before the court opens at eight in the morning."
I looked at the clock on the wall: *11:18 PM.*
Carteret County was a four-hour drive from Richmond at normal speed. Even pushing Cole’s turbocharged SUV through the torrential downpour, we were looking at over three hours.
"We can't drive there in time," Cole said, running his hands through his wet hair in despair. "We’re too far away."
"We don't need to drive," I said, my mind racing through network topologies, emergency port authorities, and digital security protocols. I turned back to Vance Sterling’s computer. "Cole, grab the lockbox and Henry’s original deed. Dad, get your phone out and call Sheriff Cooper in Beaufort—tell him Henry Mercer’s will is being executed tonight."

"What are you going to do?" Lydia asked, looking at me with wide, terrified eyes.
"I’m going to do what I do best," I said, my fingers flying across Vance’s keyboard. "I’m going to use the federal system you tried to cheat to turn Thorne's own machinery against him."
