Chapter 11 - The Corporate Raid

"Don't touch them!" a voice bellowed from the darkness of the canal channel.
Suddenly, a blinding blue and red strobe light slashed through the salt fog, reflecting violently across the black water of the sound.
The unmistakable roar of twin 500-horsepower inboard diesel engines tore through the night air.
Gliding out of the mist came a forty-five-foot Coast Guard Response Boat-Medium, its mounted spotlight locking directly onto Julian Thorne and his private security crew.
Standing on the forward deck, dressed in full operational tactical gear and a flotation vest, was Lieutenant Gabriel Alvarez. Behind him, four armed maritime enforcement petty officers stood with sidearms ready.
"This is the United States Coast Guard!" Gabriel's voice blared through the patrol boat's public address system. "All heavy machinery will immediately cut engines and drop equipment! All personnel will step away from the wetlands perimeter and keep hands visible!"
Thorne’s security guards froze in their tracks. The excavator operator immediately cut the ignition, the massive engine wheezing into silence.
Thorne’s calm expression finally slipped. He lowered his umbrella an inch, his eyes narrowing as he looked toward the patrol boat. "Lieutenant, you have no jurisdiction on private dry land! This is a state commercial parcel!"
"Negative, Mr. Thorne," Gabriel called back, stepping onto the gunwale as the patrol boat docked with a heavy rubber fender against the Alvarez wooden pier. "At twenty-three hundred hours, the Department of the Interior flagged parcel zero-four-eight-eight-three-one as an active federal investigative site for maritime deed fraud and unauthorized wetland encroachment under Title Thirty-Three of the United States Code."
Gabriel jumped onto the weathered dock, followed by two armed crew members. He gave Mateo a brief, solemn nod—a silent tribute between family—before turning his gaze to Thorne.
"I have orders from the District Commander to secure this perimeter, impound all unauthorized industrial equipment, and detain any individual refusing to comply pending federal magistrate review at sunrise."
Thorne’s mouth tightened into a hard, vicious line. He pulled a silver smartphone from his coat pocket, dialing furiously. "I will have the state attorney general on the phone in two minutes. Your career is finished, Lieutenant."
"Go ahead and dial, Thorne," I said, stepping between him and Gabriel, holding up my laptop where a live federal registry dashboard displayed an active green stamp. "While you were talking, I didn't just flag the deed. I uploaded Henry Mercer’s confession tape directly to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). Your three-million-dollar 'earnest deposit' came from an unregistered offshore shell account in the Cayman Islands linked to illegal maritime tax evasion."
Thorne’s thumb froze over his screen.
For the first time, true panic cracked his cold European facade.

"You audited the payment routing," Thorne whispered, staring at me as if he were seeing a demon.
"I’m an information security specialist, Mr. Thorne," I said, my voice ringing clear and steady in the salty sea wind. "You thought you were dealing with a frightened country club family and an old fisherman. But you stepped into my network. And in my network, criminals don't get to buy the judge."
