Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Ambush

The atmosphere on the sixty-second floor of the Moretti Tower was suffocating. The boardroom’s panoramic windows looked out over the gray, rain-lashed skyline of Chicago, mirroring the grim faces gathered around the massive mahogany table.

Adrian sat at the far end of the table, looking like a ghost of the polished heir who had walked into the Henderson wedding days earlier. His hands rested on the polished wood, trembling slightly. Beside him sat his father, Arthur, an immovable mountain of wrath, and Isabella, whose eyes were red-rimmed but fixed in an expression of lethal authority.

The double doors opened, and the room fell dead silent.

Claire walked in.

She wore a sharp, tailored ivory suit that contrasted sharply with the somber black and navy worn by the directors. Her hair was pulled back into an elegant chignon, her face immaculate, her posture commanding absolute deference. She didn't spare Adrian even a glance as she walked to the head of the table and set down a thick leather folder.

Adrian’s breath hitched in his throat. "Claire..." he choked out, leaning forward instinctively. "Claire, please—"

"Silence, Adrian," Arthur barked, slamming his palm onto the table with a force that rattled the crystal water glasses. The younger man flinched, shrinking back into his chair.

Claire opened the folder, distributing copies of the bank statements, signature verification reports, and offshore wire logs to every member of the board.

"Members of the board," Claire began, her voice carrying the smooth, lethal precision of a seasoned litigator. "Over the past forty-eight hours, I conducted a forensic review of the Eleanor Moretti Memorial Arts Endowment. Over the last three quarters, four separate tranches of one million dollars each were transferred to an offshore shell entity registered under the name 'Aegis Holding,' which resolves to a private account held by Miss Sophia Reynolds."

The board members gasped, murmuring in shock as they turned the pages.

"The secondary approval authorizations bear my digital signature," Claire continued, turning her cold, piercing eyes directly onto Adrian. "Signatures that were generated from the master terminal in Mr. Adrian Moretti’s private office while I was abroad representing this firm in London last autumn."

Adrian looked down at the documents, his face turning a sickly shade of gray. "I... I was going to pay it back," he stammered, his voice breaking. "Sophia’s creditors were threatening to seize her family's house. She told me she was suicidal, Claire! She begged me! I took it as a bridge loan, I swear to God! I transferred personal stock options to cover the gap last week—"

"You forged your wife's name to steal from your dead grandmother's charity for a mistress," Isabella cut in, her voice shaking with profound disgust. "Do not speak another word of your pathetic excuses."

Arthur stood up, his towering presence dominating the room. He looked at the legal counsel. "Draft the resolution immediately. Adrian Moretti is stripped of his title as Chief Operating Officer. His voting shares are hereby placed into a blind trust administered exclusively by Claire Moretti. He will forfeit his executive salary, his access to company accounts, and will be placed on indefinite leave pending a complete external forensic audit."

Arthur turned to look down at his son. "You are no longer an executive of this company, Adrian. And until Claire decides whether she sends you to federal prison or allows you to make restitution, you are forbidden from stepping foot on these executive floors."

Adrian turned to Claire, tears streaming freely down his hollow cheeks. "Claire, please... take the shares. Take the company. Put me in prison if you want. But don't look at me like I'm a stranger. Please... I beg you."

Claire closed her folder, her expression entirely unreadable. "You made yourself a stranger the moment you gave away what belonged to me, Adrian. You have a long way to go before you even earn the right to speak my name."
