Chapter 5 - The Audacious Intrusion

Three days of absolute silence passed. Adrian had obeyed the decree not to call, though the perimeter security team reported that a black sedan with tinted windows had been idling at the end of the estate's private lane every evening, departing only at dawn. Claire didn't need to check the license plate to know who was sitting in the cold front seat, staring hopelessly at the estate gates. She ignored him entirely.

However, the peace was shattered on Thursday afternoon.

Claire was in the greenhouse, trimming rare winter orchids that Eleanor had planted twenty years prior, when the shrill ring of the gatehouse intercom broke the silence.

She picked up the handset. "Yes, Thomas?"

"Mrs. Moretti, I apologize for disturbing you," the gate guard said, his voice laced with uncharacteristic tension. "There is a woman at the main entrance. She drove up in a rental cab. She refuses to leave and claims she will call the press to report that she is being unlawfully detained if we don't allow her to speak with you."

Claire’s eyes narrowed. "Sophia Reynolds."

"Yes, ma'am. Should I have the local sheriff escort her away?"

Claire paused, looking at the delicate white petals of the orchid in her hand. A confrontation was inevitable; cowards like Sophia thrived in the shadows of passive evasion. If Sophia wanted an audience, Claire would give her one—on her own terms.

"Open the gate, Thomas," Claire said calmly. "And instruct the security team to record every angle of the driveway and front courtyard. Do not let her enter the house. Have her brought to the stone terrace."

Ten minutes later, Sophia Reynolds stepped onto the flagstone terrace. Stripped of the dazzling designer gown and diamond heirloom she had paraded at the wedding, she looked remarkably ordinary. She wore an oversized wool coat and large sunglasses, her makeup applied with an agitation that bordered on manic.

As soon as she saw Claire sitting serenely behind an iron tea table, Sophia ripped off her glasses. Her eyes were rimmed with red, her face twisted in bitter indignation.

"You think you’re so clever, don't you?" Sophia sneered, her voice trembling with venom. "Hiding away out here, playing the saintly, injured wife while Adrian’s parents ruin my life!"

Claire didn't flinch. She took a slow sip of her tea, setting the porcelain cup down without making a sound against the saucer.

"You are trespassing, Sophia," Claire said, her voice dropping into a register so chilled it seemed to lower the temperature on the terrace. "You have sixty seconds to state your business before the sheriff arrives."

"My business?" Sophia took a furious step forward, though two burly private security guards immediately shifted out from the shadows of the colonnade, causing her to halt. "Adrian loves me! He gave me that bracelet because it belonged to our childhood! You forced him to release that disgusting statement! You forced him to kick my boutique out of the Moretti Tower! Do you have any idea what that has done to my family?"

"Your family’s financial ruin is the result of your own incompetence and your father’s fraudulent investments," Claire replied evenly. "Adrian did not give you that bracelet because he loves you. He gave it to you because you are a skilled parasite who knows precisely which buttons of nostalgia and guilt to press. But your parasite days are over."

"He came to me!" Sophia shrieked, her veneer cracking completely. "He was suffocating with you! You’re cold, calculating, boring! He told me he regretted marrying you every single day!"

Claire looked at her, completely unmoved by the desperate lies. "If he regretted marrying me, Sophia, he wouldn't be sleeping in his car outside my gate every night, weeping for a second chance to beg at my feet."

Sophia’s mouth fell open, shock paralyzing her tongue.

Claire stood up, towering over Sophia with the regal poise of a woman who commanded empires, not cheap drama. "I know about the four million dollars, Sophia. I know about the Cayman accounts. And unless you want the FBI knocking on your door before sunset, you will turn around, get back into that cab, and disappear from my life forever."
