Chapter 4 - Christmas Morning at Crestview Ridge

The morning sun broke over Crestview Ridge with the blinding, merciless brilliance that only follows an alpine blizzard. The storm had passed, leaving behind fourteen inches of virgin powder that muffled the world in heavy, crystalline silence.

Inside the five-thousand-square-foot master suite of 1404 Crestview Ridge, Andrew Vance woke to the golden sunlight cutting through the silk curtains.

He stretched lazily, feeling the weight of the Egyptian cotton sheets. For the first time in two years, the house was utterly silent. No baby cried down the hall. No exhausted, pale-faced wife moved quietly through the kitchen trying not to wake him while preparing formula. There was only the scent of expensive French perfume lingering on the pillow beside him.

Vanessa Sterling was already awake, wrapped in Claire’s cream cashmere robe, leaning against the French doors that opened onto the snowy terrace. She held a crystal flute of mimosa in one hand, her manicured fingers tapping rhythmically against the glass.

"It really is a magnificent view, Andrew," she purred, turning to him with a slow, predatory smile. "Though that ghastly split-rail fence down by the tree line has to go. It looks like something from an Appalachian farm."

Andrew swung his legs out of bed, smoothing back his dark hair. He was thirty-one, handsome in the chiseled, shallow way of men who spent three hours a day at luxury athletic clubs and measured their self-worth by the cut of their lapels.

"Consider it gone, sweetheart," Andrew said, checking his gold Rolex on the nightstand. "I’ll have the landscapers bulldoze it next week. How did you sleep?"

"Like an empress," Vanessa replied, walking over and draping her arms around his neck. "Your mother was wonderful last night. She had the caterers prep the entire dining room before midnight. Everyone at the gala was talking about how radiant we looked together. No one even asked about... what was her name again? The little mouse?"

Andrew chuckled, a dismissive flick of his hand. "Claire is where she belongs. Back in the lowlands with her father. She was an anchor around my neck, Vanessa. When you're managing nine figures of private capital, optics matter. A man needs a partner who understands power, not a girl whose idea of culture is planting petunias."

From downstairs, the aroma of hazelnut coffee and sizzling artisanal bacon drifted up the grand staircase.

"Margaret is an artist," Vanessa remarked, taking another sip of champagne. "She said the breakfast guests start arriving at nine thirty. The mayor, the bank president, two state representatives... this is going to be the official coming-out party for Vance Capital’s new era."

Andrew smiled, feeling a rush of absolute, intoxicating triumph. He walked to the master bathroom, washed his face with imported neroli soap, and put on an Italian cashmere sweater over charcoal slacks. Everything in his world was falling into place with mathematical precision. Claire had left without a fight. She had taken her two pathetic garbage bags and disappeared into the snow. By now, she was probably sobbing on her father’s worn sofa, realization setting in that she had zero claim to his empire.

He picked up his smartphone from the vanity to check his firm’s institutional balances before heading downstairs.

He tapped the screen to open the First National Treasury app.

*Error Code 403: Access Denied. Account Suspended by Secured Creditor.*

Andrew frowned. He tapped it again. The same red banner flashed across the screen.

"Stupid interface," he muttered. "The snow must have knocked out the downtown server relays."

He switched to his personal checking account—the one where he maintained an operating buffer of three hundred and fifty thousand dollars for daily expenses.

*Balance: $0.00.*

*Status: Administrative Freeze / Order of Attachment.*

Andrew’s heart gave a sudden, violent thud against his ribs. A thin film of cold sweat broke out across his forehead. "What the hell?"

He opened his email. There were ninety-four unread messages, all received between 1:15 AM and 5:00 AM.

The first was from his Chief Financial Officer, Marcus:

*Andrew, wake up. Wake up right now. The prime brokerage cleared out our master liquidity reserve at 2:00 AM under an expedited Margin Call Acceleration Notice. The guarantor pulled the collateral bond. We can't clear trades. The SEC compliance officer just locked our corporate portal. Call me immediately.*

The second was from Evelyn Cross, Lead Partner at Harrison, Sterling & Cross:

*NOTICE OF ACCELERATION AND SEIZURE OF REAL PROPERTY. Mr. Vance: Be advised that pursuant to Section 8.4 of the Conditional Guaranty executed on June 12, 2019, your default has been perfected. Immediate surrender of 1404 Crestview Ridge is required as of 0800 hours this date.*

"Andrew?" Vanessa called from the hallway, her tone shifting from playful to sharp. "The smart thermostat just shut off. The radiators are making a strange clicking noise, and the WiFi is completely down."

Downstairs, the heavy sound of a brass knocker struck the front door three times.

*THUD. THUD. THUD.*

Not the polite tap of an early holiday guest. It was the deliberate, authoritative strike of someone who carried the weight of the law behind their knuckles.

May you like

"Andrew!" Margaret’s voice shrieked from the foot of the stairs, stripped of all its usual high-society veneer. "Andrew, come down here this instant! There are three police cruisers parked across our lawn, and they’re destroying the hydrangeas!"
