Chapter 3 - 4: Moral Turpitude, Domestic Fiduciary Abandonment, and Immediate Equity Forfeiture.

"Read it, Claire. Read it out loud."

My voice shook as I read the tight, suffocating legal terminology:

*"In the event that the Borrower, Andrew H. Vance, shall willfully engage in acts of unprovoked physical, emotional, or economic domestic abandonment toward Claire Bennett Vance or any lawful issue of the union; or shall institute non-consensual dispossession of the primary marital residence against said beneficiaries without prior judicial decree... all protections under the Subordinated Corporate Shield shall terminate with immediate effect. All debt obligations shall accelerate into an unconditional, demand-callable balloon promissory note payable within twenty-four hours. Furthermore, Borrower agrees that title to the real property known as 1404 Crestview Ridge shall vest solely and irrevocably in the Trustee of the Bennett Sovereign Trust, with automatic surrender of all personal and corporate chattels situated within."*

I looked up, tears freezing on my lashes. "He... he signed this?"

"He signed it in the presence of two federal notaries and my attorney, Evelyn Cross," Dad said. "He was so eager to deposit the three-million-dollar cashier's check that he laughed when Evelyn explained the forfeiture clauses. He told her, *'Colonel Bennett is my future father-in-law. We’re family. This is just formal paperwork to keep the trust accountants happy.'*"

Dad closed the binder with a heavy, final *thud*.

"Andrew thought I was an old soldier playing with garden shears. He assumed that because I didn't correct his mother when she insulted my wool jackets, I was soft. He forgot that the first principle of asymmetric warfare is allowing your enemy to overextend his supply lines while you maintain absolute control over the terrain beneath his feet."

Dad walked to the corner desk and lifted the landline telephone. He dialed a ten-digit number from memory.

It was ten minutes past nine on Christmas Eve. Outside, the blizzard howled against the cedar siding, rattling the triple-paned glass.

"Evelyn," Dad said into the receiver without greeting or preamble. "The contingency has been triggered."

A pause. My father’s jaw clenched once, hard.

"Target has forcibly evicted Claire and Lily onto the mountain road in the middle of the blizzard. Severe hypothermia averted by less than half an hour. Target was accompanied by Margaret Vance and Vanessa Sterling. Yes. The municipal commissioner’s daughter."

He listened for thirty seconds, his eyes fixed on the map of the Euphrates valley pinned to the wall.

"Initiate Phase One immediately. Call Judge Miller at his residence; wake him if necessary. I want the emergency writ of attachment signed before midnight. Notify the sheriff's department that we will execute the writ of immediate possession at sunrise. And Evelyn?"

Dad’s voice dropped an octave, turning into pure, cold steel.

"Pull the corporate bond on Vance Capital. Freeze the operating liquidity accounts at First National. Leave him with nothing but the clothes on his back and the tuxedo he’s wearing to the country club."

He hung up the phone.

He looked at me, his eyes softening just enough for me to see the father who used to carry me on his shoulders through the Virginia woods.

"Get some sleep, Claire. In the morning, you and I are going to reclaim your home."
