Chapter 4 - The Golden Bird Flies

While Ethan was being fingerprinted and processed into the Cook County central detention facility, the fallout spread rapidly across the city’s affluent neighborhoods.
At eleven o’clock that morning, a sleek black SUV pulled up to the gated entrance of the luxury brownstone on Dearborn Street in River North.
Rosa sat in the passenger seat beside Frank, watching the third-floor balcony through dark sunglasses.
The lease on the four-thousand-square-foot luxury residence was held under the Vance Corporate Relocation Trust—a subsidiary account that I had canceled at dawn.
Outside on the sidewalk, two commercial moving flatbeds were already idling, their hydraulic ramps lowered onto the pavement.
A team of four licensed court bailiffs, armed with an expedited writ of commercial repossession, marched up the stone steps of the brownstone.
They knocked on the heavy black double doors with the loud, rhythmic thud of authority.
A moment later, the door swung open.
Lily Montgomery stood in the doorway, wrapped in an exquisite silk robe—the very robe Ethan had charged to our joint accounts three weeks earlier.
Her platinum blonde hair fell in soft curls over her bare shoulders, her manicured fingers resting lightly against her cheek, looking confused and mildly irritated.
“Can I help you?” Lily asked in a sweet, breathy southern accent.
“I’m expecting a grocery delivery from the organic market.”
The lead bailiff held up a laminated court order bearing the gold seal of the Illinois Chancery Court.
“Miss Montgomery, this property is being repossessed by the rightful titleholder, Vance Commercial Holdings. You have forty-five minutes to gather your personal effects and vacate the building.”
Lily let out a shrill, mocking laugh, crossing her arms defensively over her chest.
“You have made a huge mistake. My fiancé, Ethan Hale, owns this building. He is the Executive Vice President of Vance & Mercer Logistics.”
Rosa stepped out of the SUV, walking up the front steps with a slim tablet in her hands, her heels clicking with lethal precision.
“Correction, Miss Montgomery,” Rosa said, her voice crisp and completely devoid of warmth.
“Ethan Hale is currently wearing an orange jumpsuit in an interrogation room at the 1st District Police Station on 18th Street.”
Lily’s breath hitched in her throat, her blue eyes widening in sudden, sharp apprehension.
“What are you talking about?”
Rosa tapped her screen, holding up the booking mugshot of Ethan that had just been uploaded to the public county inmate registry.
Ethan looked disheveled, hollow-eyed, his stubble messy, staring into the police camera like a trapped animal.
“Ethan was arrested three hours ago for three point eight million dollars in corporate embezzlement,” Rosa explained calmly.
“And because every dollar used to purchase your clothes, your jewelry, and the furnishings in this townhouse was traced directly to stolen corporate funds, all personal assets inside this home are subject to an immediate federal asset freeze.”
Lily took a frantic step backward, her face draining of color until she looked as white as her silk robe.
“That’s... that’s impossible! Ethan told me he had an independent trust from his grandfather!”
“Ethan didn't have a penny of his own, Miss Montgomery,” Rosa replied with a cold, triumphant smirk.
“He lived on his wife’s credit cards, drove his wife’s cars, and bought your affection using his wife’s company funds. And now, the bill has come due.”
The four bailiffs brushed past Lily into the foyer, immediately placing red evidence tape across the high-end art, the designer furniture, and the electronic equipment.
Lily lunged toward the console table where her handbag rested, trying to snatch her diamond-encrusted Cartier watch from the marble tray.
“Don't touch that, Miss Montgomery,” the bailiff warned, stepping between her and the jewelry.
“All luxury goods purchased after March of last year are classified as stolen corporate property under federal custody rules. You may take one suitcase of basic clothing and your driver’s license.”
Lily collapsed onto the bottom step of the staircase, burying her face in her hands as tears of pure, selfish humiliation ruined her makeup.
“What am I supposed to do?” she wailed.
“I don't have anywhere to go! Ethan promised me we were moving into a mansion on the lake!”
Rosa looked down at the sobbing mistress, feeling neither hatred nor pity, only the clean satisfaction of justice completed.

“I suggest you look for a job, Miss Montgomery,” Rosa said, turning back toward the SUV.
“Because the simple man who loved you for you doesn't even have fifty dollars to buy himself a sandwich today.”
