Chapter 1 - The First Cut

The silence that stretched across my Italian marble dining room was heavy and suffocating.

Ethan stared at my phone on the table as Rosa’s calm, professional confirmation clicked off into a dial tone.

His hand, still resting on his silk tie, twitched with a mixture of disbelief and wounded male entitlement.

“You’re bluffing, Claire,” Ethan scoffed, letting out a forced laugh that bounced off the high vaulted ceilings.

“You wouldn’t dare cut off my mother’s concierge care or lock me out of my own residence. This house is marital property.”

I picked up my wine glass, taking a deliberate, slow sip of the twenty-year-old cabernet I had purchased with my own bonus check.

“Check the title deed in your desk drawer, Ethan,” I said, setting the glass down without making a sound.

“This home was purchased by my grandfather's trust in 1994, fully protected under the prenuptial agreement your own attorney reviewed before we walked down the aisle.”

Vivian’s face contorted into an ugly scowl as she clutched the boutique shopping bag against her chest.

“You heartless, calculating shrew!” Vivian shrieked, her voice shaking with outrage.

“My son gave you eight of the best years of his life while you buried your nose in balance sheets and corporate boardrooms! He stood by you when you were nothing but an emotional wreck!”

I turned my gaze slowly toward my mother-in-law, looking at the diamond studs sparkling in her earlobes.

Those earrings had been my Christmas gift to her two years ago after she wept about feeling neglected by high-society friends.

“I paid for your hip replacement, Vivian,” I said, my voice dropping into that chilling, quiet register that made corporate executives sweat.

“I paid for your three-week recovery suite at the St. Regis, paid your maid’s salary, and paid for the silk scarf you’re currently clutching to give to your son’s mistress.”

Ethan stepped forward, slamming his palm onto the polished wood of the dining table.

“Leave my mother out of this, Claire! This is between you and me! You think you can treat people like employees just because you inherited your father’s logistics empire?”

“I treat people who leach off my labor according to their market value, Ethan,” I replied, standing up to my full height.

“And right now, your market value is zero.”

His phone in his breast pocket chimed with an urgent text alert.

Then came another chime, followed immediately by a third, chiming in rapid, frantic succession.

Ethan frowned, reaching inside his jacket to pull out his titanium smartphone.

I watched his eyes dart across the illuminated screen as the bank notifications flooded his notification center.

“Primary Platinum Card ending in 4108 has been suspended by the primary account holder.”

“Vehicle lease authorization for 2024 Porsche 911 Turbo S has been revoked. Vehicle recovery dispatched.”

“Private client credit line access removed by corporate trustee.”

The color drained from Ethan’s cheeks, leaving his tanned skin looking like wet plaster under the recessed lighting.

“What... what did you do?” he stammered, his fingers trembling against the glass screen.

“I did exactly what I promised,” I said, walking toward the grand entryway of the foyer.

“You told me Lily is simple. You told me she loves you for who you are, not your money. Now you get to find out if that’s true.”

Vivian rushed toward the front door, her heels clicking frantically across the parquet floor.

“Ethan! Call your bank! Call your firm’s partners! She can’t leave us with nothing on a Thursday evening!”

“My firm’s partners?” I asked, turning back at the bottom of the grand curved staircase with a razor-sharp smile.

“Ethan, you don't have a partnership at Vance & Mercer Logistics anymore.”

Ethan froze, his phone nearly slipping from his numb fingers.

“What are you talking about?”

“Rosa’s forensic audit cleared at four o’clock this afternoon,” I told him, looking into the eyes of the man I had loved for nearly a decade.

“Tomorrow morning at eight, the board of directors convenes to review forty-two fraudulent supplier invoices signed by your private digital pen. Pack your bags, Ethan. Because by sunrise, you won't even have a desk to clear.”
