Chapter 7 - The Arrests and Legal Fallout

The following Monday, the justice system moved with devastating precision.

The local District Attorney, presented with an airtight dossier prepared by Malcolm’s team containing forensic bank audits, forged signature analyses, and intercepted electronic communications, issued arrest warrants for multiple counts of aggravated identity theft, bank fraud, wire fraud, and grand larceny.

I watched the local news broadcast from the living room of the lake house.

The cameras caught my father being led out of his corporate office in handcuffs, a suit jacket draped over his wrists to conceal the restraints. His head was bowed, avoiding the flashbulbs of reporters who had gathered after receiving an anonymous tip about the high-profile arrest. His investment firm had summarily fired him within hours of the indictment.

Logan was arrested at his townhouse. The footage showed him screaming obscenities at the arresting detectives while Belle sat on the front porch steps, sobbing uncontrollably into her hands.

The notary, facing mandatory minimum prison sentences, agreed to cooperate fully with the state, confirming that my father and Logan had paid her a cash bonus of five thousand dollars to forge my signature on the title transfer and loan documents.

Belle called me late that evening from a prepaid phone. Her voice was cracked and hollow.

"Zaden... are you happy now?" she whispered.

"No, Belle," I replied honestly, sitting by the stone fireplace. "There’s no happiness in watching my family dismantle itself. But there is relief."

"They're going to prison, Zaden. Dad’s attorney says the evidence is too complete. They’re offering a plea deal: five years for Dad, seven for Logan. And they want me to testify against my own husband to avoid being charged as an accessory!"

"Did you know, Belle?" I asked, cutting through her hysterics. "Did you know they were using my Social Security number to take out those loans?"

A long, suffocating silence hung over the line.

"Logan told me it was the only way to save our house," she whispered, her voice trembling. "He said you were young, that you could recover from a bad credit score, that young people rebuild their lives all the time. He promised me he would fix it."

"You chose your lifestyle over my life, Belle. You watched me waste away. You sat across from me at Thanksgiving dinner knowing that every bite of food you swallowed was bought with the money that was supposed to keep a roof over my head."

"Zaden, please... if you talk to the prosecutor, if you tell them you gave permission retroactively, the charges will be reduced—"

"I will never lie to protect you," I said firmly. "You made your bed, Belle. Now you have to lie in it."

I disconnected the call and blocked the number.
