Chapter 5 - The Desperate Pleas

By late afternoon, the legal storm broke over my family. Process servers arrived at my parents' suburban home and Belle’s townhouse simultaneously, delivering notices of immediate asset freezes, lis pendens filings against their properties, and formal demands for financial restitution.

I was resting in the guest suite of Grandma Evelyn's estate when the front gate intercom began buzzing relentlessly. When the groundskeeper answered, the voice coming through the speaker was hysterical.

It was my mother.

Grandma allowed her onto the property, but only under the condition that Malcolm and two private security guards were present in the drawing room.

When Mom stepped inside, she looked unrecognizable. Her perfectly coiffed hair was disheveled, her eyes bloodshot and swollen. She didn't look at Grandma; she rushed straight toward me, dropping to her knees on the Persian rug.

"Zaden, darling, you have to stop this!" she sobbed, attempting to grab my knees. I pulled my legs back, pressing myself against the cushions of the armchair. "The bank just froze our checking accounts! Arthur’s firm heard about the investigation through industry channels, and they’ve placed him on administrative leave! If this goes to the papers, your father's career is finished!"

"Your husband committed federal fraud, Eleanor," Grandma Evelyn said sharply from her chair. "His career should have ended the moment he forged his son's name."

Mom whipped her head toward Grandma, her sorrow instantly curdling into rage. "You did this! You are tearing this family apart over bricks and mortar! Money can be replaced, Evelyn! Belle is having panic attacks! Logan is threatening to divorce her if his parents are dragged into court! Do you want your granddaughter’s life ruined?"

"Logan's parents lived on stolen property for three years," I said, my voice cold and hollow. "Where was your concern for my life when I was sleeping through freezing rain in November, Mom? Did you lose any sleep wondering if I was eating? Did you have panic attacks when you sent me text messages telling me I was worthless because I couldn't pay my bills?"

Mom stared at me, her chest heaving. "We thought you were exaggerating! You always played the victim, Zaden! You had a car, you had options! We were trying to teach you resilience!"

"You weren't teaching me resilience. You were starving me out so I wouldn't ask questions."

Before Mom could reply, the heavy front door opened again. Logan marched in uninvited, bypassing the security guards who stepped forward to block him. Logan’s coat was unbuttoned, his face flushed with bourbon and fury.

"Get your hands off me," Logan snarled at the guards, fixing his glare on me. "Zaden, you little coward. You think you're clever hiding behind your grandmother's skirt? My father has a heart condition! If your lawyers send deputies to evict him from Lake Oconee, and anything happens to him, I will hold you personally responsible!"

"Your father knew the property wasn't his," Malcolm said, stepping smoothly between Logan and me. "We have email correspondence between you and your father from two years ago, discussing how to conceal the transfer from county tax assessors. Your father is an active co-conspirator."

Logan stopped dead in his tracks, the color draining instantly from his face. "You... you don't have our emails."

"Subpoenas in financial fraud investigations are remarkably broad, Mr. Miller," Malcolm replied with a thin, humorless smile. "I suggest you leave this premises immediately. Every word you speak in this room is being recorded by the estate's security system and will be added to the pending criminal complaint."

Logan looked around the room, realizing that intimidation would not work here. He looked at me, his lip curling with pure malice. "You're destroying your own blood, Zaden. When this is over, you won't have a family left."

"I haven't had a family for three years, Logan," I said evenly. "Now get out."
