Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Vance House

The scandal hit the front pages of The Chicago Tribune and The Wall Street Journal by noon the following day.

VANCE FINANCIAL EMBROILED IN INTERNATIONAL ESPIONAGE; CEO ARRESTED IN FEDERAL STING OPERATION.

The fall of Arthur Vance’s carefully curated family empire was swift, total, and unforgiving.

Within seventy-two hours, the SEC froze every account associated with Vance Financial. Julian’s wife, Chloe—the woman who had laughed as her Cabernet stained my uniform—was named as a co-conspirator after auditors discovered her signature on three offshore transfer documents used to hide Julian’s embezzlement.

My father’s retirement party was instantly canceled. The prestigious law firm he had served for three decades stripped his name from their letterhead, issuing a public statement severing all ties with the Vance family to protect their corporate clients.

A week after the night at Warehouse 14, I stood inside my father’s grand Oakridge estate.

The house was empty. Federal marshals had placed asset seizure tags on the mahogany furniture, the artwork, and the sports cars in the five-car garage to pay for restitution to Julian’s defrauded investors.

Arthur Vance sat on a folding chair in the center of the vast, hollow living room. He looked as though he had aged twenty years in seven days. His hair was messy, his tailored suit unbuttoned, his eyes staring blankly at the empty fireplace where his portrait used to hang.

Chloe was sitting near the window, weeping quietly as her personal attorney explained the plea bargain options over a speakerphone.

My father looked up as my boots clicked against the hardwood floor.

I wore my dry-cleaned Class A uniform—the Cabernet stain completely removed by a specialist—with my ribbons, my intelligence insignias, and the titanium chain resting clean and polished against my collar.

"Marcus," my father whispered, his voice hoarse and broken. He looked at my uniform, then at the chain around my neck, no longer seeing a "dog collar" or a "cheap Army toy," but the absolute, unyielding symbol of a authority he couldn't manipulate or bribe.

"The federal court granted your request for an independent trustee, Dad," I said, setting a folder of legal documents on the window ledge beside Chloe. "I’ve arranged for a modest two-bedroom apartment near the coast for you and your stepmother. Your pension remains intact, but the Oakridge house, the cars, and the investment accounts are being liquidated tomorrow."

Arthur stared at me, tears welling in his sunken eyes. "You... you saved my pension?"

"I don't leave people behind, Dad," I said calmly. "Even when they leave me behind."

He bowed his head, his shoulders shaking as he wept silently in the middle of his ruined palace.

Chloe looked up at me, her face pale, her eyes filled with shame. "Marcus... I’m sorry. For the wine... for what we said at dinner..."

"Apologize to the court, Chloe," I replied smoothly, turning toward the double oak doors. "They’re the ones who are going to decide your sentence."
