Chapter 4 - The Midnight Call

Fifteen minutes later, the interior of Warehouse 14 was bathed in the harsh white light of high-powered tactical halogen lamps.

Federal agents from the DCIS and the FBI were zip-tying Viktor and his operatives, loading them into armored transport vans. Investigators were cataloging evidence, photographing the diplomatic SUV, and securing Julian’s Porsche.

Julian sat on the bumper of an ambulance, wrapped in a shock blanket, crying silently as a federal agent read him his Miranda rights.

Special Agent Sarah Miller—the lead DCIS investigator on the regional task force—walked over to where I stood near the loading dock, handing me a bottle of water.

"We’ve been tracking Viktor’s cell for six months, Captain Vance," Miller said, looking at me with deep respect. "We knew he was looking for an entry point into the Midwestern supply chain, but we didn't expect him to buy a hardware key from a civilian corporate executive."

"Julian was desperate," I said, taking a sip of water. "He thought it was just a piece of military hardware he could leverage to fix his financial fraud."

"He’s looking at twenty years in a federal penitentiary for attempted treason and espionage," Miller said flatly. "And his venture capital firm is being raided by the SEC as we speak."

She looked at the titanium chain hanging against my black shirt. "Are you going to be alright, Marcus?"

"I’m fine, Sarah," I replied. "I need to make a phone call."

I walked away from the flashing lights, stepping out into the quiet drizzle near the train tracks. I pulled out my phone and dialed my father’s private line.

He answered on the second ring, his voice sounding sharp, irritated, and thick with expensive scotch.

"Marcus? Where the hell are you? You walked out of my dinner party like a child, leaving your stepmother to explain your dramatic exit to our guests. And where is your brother? His wife says he hasn't returned her calls."

I listened to my father’s voice—the same voice that had spent my entire life telling me I wasn't enough, that my service was a disappointment, that my dignity was a joke to be shared over roasted duck.

"Dad," I said, my voice completely level. "I’m at Warehouse 14 on Remington Avenue."

There was a short pause on the line. "What are you talking about? What is Remington Avenue?"

"Julian stole the chain from the powder room tonight," I explained smoothly. "He took it to sell to a foreign espionage syndicate for two million dollars to cover up the six million dollars he embezzled from his investment firm."

"What?!" Arthur Vance roared, his voice cracking with shock and immediate fury. "How dare you make up such disgusting lies about your brother! Julian is a respected executive! You are a bitter, jealous—"

"The FBI and DCIS are currently processing the crime scene, Dad," I interrupted, cutting his roar down to a dead silence. "Julian is sitting in handcuffs ten feet away from me. He has already confessed on a federal wire recording. He mentioned that you gave him access to the family trust accounts to hide his initial losses."

The silence on the other end of the line was absolute. I could hear Arthur Vance’s heavy, uneven breathing over the speaker.

"Marcus..." my father stammered, his voice suddenly losing all of its aristocratic authority, sounding frail, old, and terrified. "Marcus... please. Tell me this isn't real. Tell me you can fix this. You're in intelligence... call your superiors! Tell them it was a family misunderstanding!"

"It wasn't a misunderstanding, Dad," I said quietly. "It was a crime. And for thirty years, you’ve protected Julian’s crimes while making a joke out of my service."

"Marcus, please!" Arthur wept, dropping all pretense of dignity. "If this goes to the press... my retirement... my reputation... the Vance name will be ruined!"

May you like

"You should have cared more about your son than your name, Dad," I said softly.

I ended the call, set the phone to silent, and placed it back into my pocket.
