Chapter 7 - THE DNA REVELATION

Ten days later, the court-ordered DNA paternity test results arrived.

The hearing took place in a private, high-security courtroom at the Franklin County Domestic Relations Court.

I sat at the petitioner's table with Marcus Vance. Across the room sat Mark, dressed in a sharp gray suit, flanked by two high-priced corporate defense attorneys. Sitting in the back row of the gallery was his mother, Diane, wearing a dark coat, looking pale and fragile.

Emily was nowhere to be seen—her divorce petition had been officially served to Mark's legal team twenty-four hours earlier.

Judge Sarah Jenkins, a stern, sharp-eyed woman in her fifties, stepped up to the bench and opened the sealed official envelope from the State Forensic Genetics Laboratory.

The courtroom fell dead quiet.

Judge Jenkins adjusted her glasses, reading the document line by line. She looked up over the top of the paper, eyeing Mark with an unreadable expression.

"The DNA swab results conducted on minor children Luke Vance and Owen Vance," Judge Jenkins read clearly into the record, "indicate a 99.998% probability of paternity matching the respondent, Mark Vance."

Mark’s chief attorney cleared his throat, trying to maintain his composure. "Your Honor, while the biological paternity is now established, my client maintains that the petitioner intentionally concealed the existence of these children to deprive him of his constitutional parental rights—"

"Save it, Counsel," Judge Jenkins interrupted cleanly, holding up a hand. "I have reviewed the evidence submitted by the petitioner, including a handwritten note sent by your client to the petitioner four weeks ago, mocking her supposed inability to conceive."

Mark flinched in his leather chair.

"Your client's behavior," Judge Jenkins continued, her voice turning as sharp as steel, "displays an appalling level of emotional cruelty, vanity, and calculated neglect. He abandoned a pregnant woman, publicly insulted her body for years, and invited her to a social event specifically to inflict emotional damage."

Mark’s lawyer tried to speak again. "Your Honor—"

"Furthermore," Judge Jenkins pressed on, "in light of the respondent's public outburst at the baby shower where he referred to these three-year-old children with profane insults in front of thirty witnesses, this court finds that immediate, unsupervised contact poses a severe risk to the emotional well-being of the minors."

Diane let out a loud, choked sob from the back row.

"Order of the Court," Judge Jenkins declared, slamming her heavy gavel. "Biological father Mark Vance is ordered to pay immediate retroactive child support in the amount of $94,200, to be remitted within thirty days. Ongoing monthly child support is set at $3,850."

Mark stood up, his face red with panic. "Your Honor! What about my custody?! What about my visitation?!"

"Parental rights are earned through care, Mr. Vance, not demanded after four years of absence," Judge Jenkins stated coldly. "You are granted one hour of supervised visitation per week at the court family center, under the supervision of a licensed child psychologist. Court is adjourned."

BANG.

The heavy wooden gavel struck the block.

Mark collapsed back into his chair, his head buried in his hands, as his high-priced attorneys looked down at him with utter embarrassment.

I stood up, buttoned my navy blazer, and walked out of the courtroom with my head held high, without giving my ex-husband a single backward glance.
