Chapter 5 - A New Chapter Begins

Monday morning brought a crisp autumn breeze through Columbus, and with it, a profound sense of emotional realignment.
Gloria’s arraignment took place early that morning. Refusing to take responsibility, her defense attorney initially advised her to plead not guilty, but with the digital paper trail, bank affidavits, and signed transfer slips stacked overwhelmingly against her, the reality of her legal jeopardy quickly set in. She was released on her own recognizance pending trial, but the conditions were strict: no contact with Lily or our household, and severe restrictions on her financial assets.
More importantly, the bank officially confirmed by midday that the $32,000 had been returned in full to Lily’s educational trust.
When Lily checked her account balance on her tablet after school, she let out a joyful squeal that echoed down the hallway.
“It’s back, Mom! Look! Every single penny!” she shouted, running into the kitchen where I was prepping dinner.
“I told you your grandfather’s gift was protected, sweetheart,” I said, pulling her into a tight hug. “Your dad made sure of that.”
That evening, the doorbell rang just as we were sitting down to dinner. Daniel went to answer it, returning a moment later carrying a large, beautifully wrapped gift box and a handwritten card.
“It’s from Megan,” Daniel said, placing it in the center of the table.
Lily opened the card first. Inside, written in Megan’s neat cursive, were the words:
Dear Lily, I want to apologize again for everything that happened on Sunday. You are an incredible artist, an amazing baker, and truly my favorite niece in the entire world. I want to commission you to bake my birthday cake every single year for the rest of my life—and this time, I’m paying you my professional rate! With all my love, Aunt Megan.
Attached to the card was a gift certificate for a high-end baking supply store in downtown Columbus, complete with professional-grade piping tips, artisanal vanilla bean paste, and a brand-new kitchen scale.

Lily’s eyes sparkled with renewed inspiration. “Mom, Dad... can I bake a lemon chiffon cake this weekend? Just for us?”
“You can bake whatever you want, chef,” Daniel laughed, raising his glass of sparkling cider. “To new beginnings.”
