Chapter 4 - The Aftermath and the Rescue

The house felt remarkably quiet after the police cruiser pulled out of the driveway. The remaining relatives had hastily excused themselves, offering awkward, muttered apologies before fleeing into the Sunday afternoon traffic.

Only Megan remained, sitting slumped at the end of the long dining table, staring miserably at the floor.

Daniel walked over to the trash can. With slow, deliberate movements, he reached inside, pushed aside the coffee grounds and paper plates, and carefully lifted out Lily’s ruined cake.

“Daniel, what are you doing?” I asked, surprised. “It’s ruined.”

“It’s not,” he said softly. He carried the cardboard tray over to the kitchen counter, taking a clean paper towel to gently brush away a stray coffee ground that had adhered to the top vanilla layer. The white frosting letters—Favorite Aunt—were slightly smeared, and the structure was tilted, but the core of the cake remained intact.

He turned to Megan. “You didn't know about the money, did you, Meg?”

Megan looked up, her eyes swimming with fresh tears. “No, Daniel! I swear to God, I didn’t! Mom told me she won a travel voucher from her garden club sweepstakes. If I had known... if I had any idea she stole it from Lily’s college fund, I would have canceled the trip instantly! I love Lily. You guys know I do.”

Lily wiped her eyes with the back of her sleeve, looking over from the kitchen table. “Really, Aunt Megan?”

Megan stood up, walking quickly across the kitchen, and knelt beside Lily’s chair, taking both of her niece’s hands in hers. “I am so, so sorry, Lily. For what Mom did, and for how she treated your cake. That cake was the sweetest thing anyone has ever made for me. Look at those little roses—I know how long it takes to pipe those. You spent three days on it. It’s the best birthday gift I’ve ever received.”

The tension in the room began to thaw, replaced by a shared, melancholic relief.

“The bank already assured me,” Daniel said, stepping into the kitchen while dialing his phone. “Because the fraudulent transfers were reported within the statutory window and accompanied by conclusive IP evidence, the fraud protection unit is reversing the transaction. Lily’s college fund will be fully restored by Tuesday morning.”

Lily let out a long breath she seemed to have been holding for an hour. “Really, Dad?”

“Really,” Daniel smiled, walking over to wrap his arms around both Lily and me, pulling Megan into the embrace as well. “Your college fund is safe. And as for today... well, I think we have a birthday cake that needs rescuing.”
