Chapter 2 - The Bloodline Recognition

The silence in the hotel suite was absolute.
Dante dropped slowly onto one knee on the carpet. The terrifying, ruthless mafia boss vanished, replaced by a man looking at a miracle he had never believed he deserved.
Leo blinked, his little brow furrowing as he looked at the tall stranger kneeling ten feet away. He looked at Dante's dark hair, then reached up with his small hand to touch his own black curls. Then he looked at Dante's gray eyes.
"Mommy," Leo whispered, pointing a tiny finger at Dante. "That's the man from the airport."
Dante let out a choked, shuddering breath. A single tear escaped his eye, tracking down his dark stubble. He didn't reach for the boy. He kept his hands palms-up on his knees, giving Leo complete control of the space.
"Hello, Leo," Dante said, his voice softer than I had ever heard it in eight years. "I'm... I'm a friend of your mother's."
Leo took two cautious steps forward, his stuffed dinosaur clutched against his chest. He stopped right in front of Dante, studying his face with that serious, intense little frown that I knew so well.
"You have my eyes," Leo stated cleanly, with the absolute logic of a three-year-old.
Dante let out a raspy, wet laugh, nodding slowly. "No, little man. I think you have mine."
Leo reached out his tiny hand and gently touched the faint scar running along Dante's jawline—a scar Dante had received six years ago protecting a shipment in the East Side docks.
Dante closed his eyes at the light touch, his shoulders shaking silently as he absorbed the sensation of his son's touch for the very first time.
I stood by the wall, my hand pressed over my mouth, sobbing quietly as I watched the two men in my life—the father and the son—meet in the quiet shadows of a hotel room.
"Elena," Dante whispered, looking up at me without rising from his knee. "Please. Let me protect him. Let me protect both of you."
"Protect us from what, Dante?" I asked, my voice shaking as I wiped my eyes. "You said the contract was settled. You said Victoria took the debt."
Dante's expression instantly hardened, the warm, tender father vanishing behind a cold mask of dark, ruthless reality.
"Victoria lied to both of us, Elena," Dante revealed quietly.
My heart dropped. "What do you mean?"
"Six months ago, my father passed away," Dante explained, standing up slowly, placing a protective hand on Leo's shoulder as the little boy leaned comfortably against his leg. "When I took over the primary seat as Don of the Moretti family, I initiated a full audit of the Carter settlement accounts."
Dante pulled a encrypted satellite drive from his inner jacket pocket and set it on the coffee table.
"Victoria didn't just agree to the marriage contract to save your father," Dante said, his eyes flashing with a cold, lethal fire. "She forged secondary financial documents. She used the Moretti legal umbrella to seize your mother's private inheritance—the estate that was supposed to go to you. She has been funneling millions from the family trust into private accounts in the Cayman Islands, and three weeks ago, she made contact with the Falcone syndicate in New York."
"Why?" I gasped.
"Because she discovered that you had a son," Dante stated flatly. "Victoria is barren, Elena. Under Moretti family charter rules, an elder Don without an heir forfeits twenty-five percent of his territory to the secondary council. Victoria knew that if the council discovered I had a legitimate biological son with you, her entire financial leverage would disappear overnight."
I looked at the sleeping city outside the window, a wave of icy terror washing through my veins.
My sister hadn't just taken the man I loved. She had been hunting my son's existence to protect her stolen wealth.
"Where is she now, Dante?" I asked, my voice barely audible.
Dante reached down, gently lifting Leo into his broad arms. The little boy didn't cry; he simply rested his small head against Dante's broad shoulder, his little fingers resting on Dante's lapel.
"She's at the Moretti estate in River Forest," Dante said, his gray eyes cold and hard as granite. "Expecting me to return from the airport alone."

Dante looked at me, his gaze fierce, possessive, and unyielding.
"You brought my son back to Chicago, Elena," Dante whispered. "Now let me give him his true home."
