Chapter 6 - The True Home

Three years later. Summer.

The afternoon sun cast a warm, golden glow across the wide wooden deck of the restored farmhouse in Story County.

Five-year-old Oliver and Emma were running across the lush green lawn, chasing a golden retriever puppy named Barnaby, their musical, high-pitched laughter ringing out across the quiet valley under the open blue Iowa sky.

I sat on the wide porch swing, wearing a comfortable white linen dress, holding a cool glass of iced tea.

Sitting beside me was my mother, Helen, knitting a small yellow wool sweater for Emma, her hands moving smoothly and without pain.

My phone chimed on the wicker table beside me.

It was an email notification from Marcus Vance:

Jessica, final notice from the Iowa Department of Corrections. Ryan Miller’s petition for early parole has been denied. He will serve his full eight-year sentence at Anamosa. Vivian’s release conditions include a permanent 10-year Restraining Order.

I read the email, locked my phone, and set it facedown on the table.

The dark memories of Sycamore Lane, the bleach smell, the threats, and the court battles were distant background noise. Ryan and Vivian were buried under the weight of their own crimes, held accountable by the very law they had tried to manipulate.

Down on the lawn, Emma stopped running, picked up a bright yellow sunflower from the garden border, and came sprinting up the porch steps toward us.

"Look, Grandma! Look, Mommy!" Emma cheered, her cheeks rosy, her brown eyes bright and clear as she held the sunflower out toward my mother. "I picked the sun for you!"

My mother reached out, pulling her sweet granddaughter into a warm, tight hug, kissing her cheek.

"It's the most beautiful sun in the world, Emma," my mother whispered, her voice full of pure, unbroken joy.

I reached out, taking my mother’s hand in mine, feeling the warm summer breeze blow across the porch.

We were safe. We were unbroken. And standing in the bright, warm light of our true home, my family was finally, gloriously free.
