Chapter 2 - The Thanksgiving Table

By 5:00 PM, the smell of roasting turkey and cinnamon cider filled the kitchen, but the air inside the house remained thick with tension.

Ryan sat at the head of the long oak dining table, wearing a crisp blue button-down shirt, carving the turkey with a long silver knife. Vivian sat to his right, her diamond rings clinking against her crystal water glass, wearing an expensive silk blouse I had bought her for her birthday last year.

My mother, Helen, sat quietly near the end of the table, holding Emma on her lap. Oliver sat beside me, coloring silently on a paper placemat.

"Well," Vivian said smoothly, taking a sip of her wine and looking around the table with a cold, victorious smile. "It took all afternoon, but at least the dining room looks respectable now. It's a shame Helen couldn't get the wine stains out of the tablecloth, but I suppose we can't expect perfection from someone with bad hands."

Ryan chuckled, dropping two thick slices of white meat onto Vivian’s plate. "Mom’s right, Jess. You really overreacted earlier. We’re a family. We help each other out. My mom was just trying to keep your mother busy so she wouldn't feel useless."

I set my fork down on my plate with a quiet, deliberate CLACK.

"Is that what she was doing, Ryan?" I asked, my voice calm, almost conversational. "Keeping her busy?"

Ryan frowned, setting the carving knife down. "Don't start again, Jess. It's Thanksgiving."

"You're right," I smiled—a cold, sharp smile that made Ryan’s eyes narrow in sudden suspicion. "It is Thanksgiving. A time for giving thanks. And a time for absolute transparency."

I reached under my seat, pulled out my leather briefcase, and set it flat on the dining table right beside the turkey platter.

Vivian scoffed, setting her glass down. "What is that nonsense? Put that away! We're eating!"

"I think you'll want to see this, Vivian," I said, opening the latch. "It's a Thanksgiving gift from my father."

Ryan’s face went slightly pale. "Jess... what are you talking about? Your dad is in a nursing home. He can barely talk."

"He couldn't talk to me," I agreed, pulling out a thick stack of printed financial documents and setting them in front of Ryan. "But he could record phone calls. And he kept very thorough bank records."

Ryan looked down at the top page.

The title read: FORENSIC AUDIT — BAKER-MILLER COMMERCIAL ACCOUNT (2024–2026).

Below the title was a line-by-line breakdown of thirty-four unauthorized wire transfers totaling $82,400, routed directly from our joint family trust account into an online casino merchant account registered under the name Vivian Miller.

Vivian’s face went from pale to an ugly, blotchy gray. She gasped, springing out of her chair so fast her wine glass tipped over, spilling dark red wine across the white linen tablecloth.

"Where... where did you get that?!" Vivian shrieked, her hands trembling as she reached out to grab the paper.

I slapped my hand down over the document, pinning it to the table. "Don't touch it, Vivian. That's a certified court exhibit."

Ryan stood up, his chair scraping violently against the hardwood floor. "Jessica! What the hell is this?! Did you hack my mother's accounts?!"

"I didn't have to hack anything, Ryan," I said, standing up to meet his gaze. "My father documented every dollar you and your mother stole from my children's inheritance while I was working sixty hours a week in Boston."

"You crazy bitch!" Ryan shouted, stepping around the table toward me, his face contorted in rage. "You think you can come into my house on Thanksgiving and insult my mother with fake papers?!"

"It's not your house, Ryan," a deep, authoritative voice spoke from the hallway.

Ryan froze.

Walking into the dining room was Marcus Vance, wearing a sharp charcoal suit, holding a leather briefcase. Beside him walked two uniformed officers from the Des Moines Police Department and a certified court process server.

"Marcus?" Ryan stammered, backing away from the table. "What... what are you doing here?"

"I am here representing Jessica Miller and the Estate of Arthur Braddock," Marcus stated cleanly, setting a heavy legal packet in front of Ryan. "Mr. Miller, you are formally served with an Emergency Ex-Parte Order of Protection, an Eviction Notice for 1422 Sycamore Lane, and a Petition for Absolute Divorce."

Vivian let out a sharp, hysterical shriek. "Eviction?! This is my son's house!"

"This house was purchased solely by Jessica Miller prior to her marriage, Mrs. Miller," Marcus corrected her coldly. "Your son’s name is not on the deed. Neither is yours. You have two hours to clear your personal belongings from the premises under police supervision."

"You can't do this!" Ryan screamed, pointing a trembling finger at me. "I have rights! I'm the father of those twins! I'm not leaving my kids!"

"You're also under active investigation for Grand Larceny, Extortion, and Elder Abuse, Mr. Miller," Detective Reed stepped forward, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his belt. "Your father-in-law provided thirty hours of audio recordings detailing your attempts to coerce him into signing over commercial land rights under threat of physical and domestic harm."

Detective Reed looked at Helen, then looked at the purple, finger-shaped bruises wrapped around her right wrist.

"And Mrs. Helen Braddock has just given a formal statement regarding the physical assault that occurred in this house on Tuesday evening," Detective Reed added, his eyes burning with cold disgust as he looked at Ryan. "Hands behind your back, Mr. Miller."

Ryan looked at me. The arrogant, controlling husband who had threatened to take my children away two hours ago was completely gone. In his place stood a pathetic, terrified man whose eyes filled with frantic, weeping tears.

"Jessie... please..." Ryan sobbed as the handcuffs clicked around his wrists. "It was my mom! She made me do it! She said we needed the money! Jessie, don't do this to our family!"

"You ruined this family seven years ago, Ryan," I said, my voice completely steady as I picked up Emma and held Oliver’s small hand in mine. "Take him away."
