Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

By Wednesday afternoon, Daniel’s world wasn't just crumbling—it had turned to dust.

The corporate fallout had been swifter than even Marcus anticipated. Arthur Sterling’s firm, Sterling & Croft, traded on reputation, client trust, and high-net-worth conservative portfolios. Having one of their junior partners exposed as an embezzler of his own child's funds in front of twenty major corporate accounts wasn't just a PR nightmare; it was an existential threat.

Daniel had been officially terminated for “moral turpitude and violations of partner conduct codes.”

No severance. No accrued bonuses. No golden parachute.

I was sitting in a sunny café downstairs from my marketing firm’s headquarters—I had returned to work early, taking control of my life with a vengeance—when my phone buzzed with an incoming FaceTime call from an unfamiliar number.

I hesitated, then answered.

The screen lit up with the interior of an apartment I didn't recognize. But I recognized the two people screaming at each other in the background.

Chloe Vance was standing in front of an open wardrobe, throwing designer garments into a pair of open suitcases. Daniel stood in the doorway, his tie askew, his hair wild, looking as though he hadn't slept or shaved since Sunday afternoon.

The phone had clearly been set down on a kitchen counter, running without Daniel’s knowledge.

“—you told me you had access to the trust!” Chloe shrieked, her voice echoing sharply through my speaker. “You told me she was a nobody who wouldn't dare fight back! You said she was terrified of losing you!”

“I didn't know she had the statements, Chloe!” Daniel yelled, his voice cracking with exhaustion. “She was tracking the IP addresses! She hired an attorney months ago! She knew about the hospital bills before I even signed the discharge papers!”

“Well, you need to get the money out of the LLC!” Chloe screamed, slamming a drawer shut. “My rent is due tomorrow! The private midwife requires a five-thousand-dollar retainer! I can’t be under stress like this, Daniel—the baby is due in ten weeks!”

“There is no money in the LLC!” Daniel roared, grabbing his own hair with both hands. “The account is frozen! The state’s attorney is looking into the signature on the HELOC! If I touch that money, I’m going to prison! Do you hear me? Prison!”

Chloe stopped.

She turned slowly toward him, her face completely cold. The frantic, tearful woman vanished, replaced by someone calculating and sharp.

“Then what good are you to me?” she asked.

Daniel froze. “What did you say?”

“You heard me,” she spat, tossing a cashmere sweater into her bag. “I reached out to you because you said you were making partner. You said you were pulling four hundred grand a year and your wife was an irrelevant placeholder. Now you have no job, your house is in foreclosure, and you’re facing felony charges?”

“Chloe... I threw away my family for you!” Daniel sobbed, falling toward her, his arms outstretched. “I gave you my daughter’s future! I gave you everything!”

“Nobody asked you to be sloppy, Daniel,” she said, her voice dropping into a pitiless sneer. “And for your information? The baby isn't even yours.”

Daniel stopped dead in his tracks.

Through the phone speaker, his breathing sounded like an animal choking on water.

“...What?”

“Marcus and I were still together until September,” Chloe said casually, zipping her suitcase with a violent tug. “I told you what you needed to hear so you’d pay for the delivery and the apartment. You were always an easy mark, Daniel. You were desperate to feel like a big man. Well, congratulations. You’re a big man with an empty wallet.”

The phone moved. A hand reached over the screen, and the call disconnected.

I set my coffee cup down on the small marble table.

My hands were perfectly steady.

I had spent months wondering what Chloe had that I didn't. Was she prettier? Was she more exciting? Was she some grand, tragic romance that Daniel had never been able to forget?

She was none of those things.

She was simply a mirror that reflected his own shallow vanity back at him. And now, the mirror had shattered into a thousand jagged pieces, right in his face.
