Chapter 6 - Melissa’s Secret Confession

By midnight, Evan was being held in a holding cell at the Jackson County Detention Center, pending formal arraignment on charges of first-degree assault and armed criminal action.

Rachel was lying on the living room sofa, her medication finally dulling the burning fire in her face, when a frantic knock echoed against the front door.

Daniel stood up instantly, grabbing an aluminum baseball bat from behind the coat rack. “Stay here, Rach.”

He approached the door, looking through the peephole. He lowered the bat, frowning in confusion. “Rachel… it’s Melissa.”

Rachel sat up slowly, clutching a cardigan over her shoulders. “Let her in.”

When Daniel unlocked the door, Melissa practically fell into the entryway. Her mascara was smeared down her cheeks, her hair was disheveled, and she was hyperventilating, clutching a leather-bound journal to her chest as if her life depended on it.

“Rachel! Oh God, Rachel!” Melissa dropped to her knees by the sofa, weeping uncontrollably. “I didn’t know! I swear to you, I didn’t know what he was planning for tonight!”

“Melissa, stop,” Rachel said softly, her heart aching at the sight of her sister-in-law’s breakdown. “Tell me what is going on. What was Evan doing in that garage?”

Melissa took a ragged breath, trying to steady her shivering hands. She opened the leather journal, exposing pages filled with desperate calculations, red-inked debts, and dates marked with black crosses.

“Evan is broke, Rachel. Completely broke,” Melissa sobbed. “He lost everything eighteen months ago in an illegal offshore sportsbook based in Costa Rica. He owes over four hundred thousand dollars to people who don’t use collection agencies. They came to our house two months ago while Evan was out. They stood in our kitchen and told me that if the debt wasn’t cleared by the end of this month, they would burn our house down with us inside.”

Rachel felt the room spinning. “Four hundred thousand dollars? But Grandfather’s trust—”

“Arthur’s trust was the only way out,” Melissa whispered, her voice dropping to a terrified hush. “Evan found a loophole. The trust had a catastrophic disability clause. If you suffered severe, disabling facial disfigurement or neurological trauma that prevented you from working in your field as a graphic designer, the full insurance rider—two million dollars—would be released immediately to your designated legal guardian.”

Rachel reached up and touched the bandage on her face. Her stomach churned with pure revulsion. “He… he tried to blind me. He tried to ruin my face so he could cash in on my disability.”

“It’s worse than that,” Melissa said, turning the journal to the final page, where a hand-drawn diagram made Rachel’s blood run cold. “The cake wasn’t the end of it. The cake was only step one.”
