Chapter 8 - The Poisoned Well

The air in the room dropped ten degrees. Marcus’s hand drifted toward his concealed firearm, his eyes burning with lethal intent. Even Agnes seemed horrified by her son’s threat to use an unborn child as a bargaining chip.

I slowly placed both hands on the table and pushed myself up. My movements were slow, measured, and dignified.

"Parental rights?" I asked, my voice barely louder than a whisper, yet carrying enough venom to silence the room. "You dare threaten my child?"

Ethan took a subconscious half-step back, suddenly reminded of who he was actually dealing with.

"Samuel," I said, not taking my eyes off Ethan. "Read the prenatal agreement Ethan signed two weeks before our wedding."

Samuel pulled a certified legal document with a gold notary seal from his briefcase. He adjusted his glasses and read with chilling precision:

*"Clause 14, Section B: In the event of documented infidelity, attempted corporate espionage, or criminal indictment involving moral turpitude on the part of the non-lineal spouse, all claims to community property, alimony, and parental custody are irrevocably surrendered to the primary trustee, Elena Aurelia. Furthermore, the non-lineal spouse shall be held personally liable for all legal damages incurred by the Aurelia family estate."*

Ethan stared at Samuel in stunned disbelief. "That... that's impossible. I never signed that!"

"You signed twelve different disclosure forms the week before the wedding, Ethan," I said coldly. "You were so busy picking out your three-hundred-thousand-dollar wedding watch and boasting to your fraternity brothers about bagging a billionaire heiress that you didn't even read the riders my father’s attorneys attached to the prenuptial agreement."

Ethan’s breathing became ragged. "No... no, no, no. A judge won't uphold that! It’s unconscionable!"

"A judge already upheld it," Samuel interjected smoothly. "At seven-thirty this morning, Judge Harrison of the New York Supreme Court reviewed Ethan’s criminal indictment, the surveillance footage from the gala, and the signed prenatal agreement. He granted an emergency ex-parte protective order. Ethan Vance is prohibited from coming within one thousand feet of Elena Aurelia, Aurelia Tower, and any medical facility where the child may be delivered."

Samuel pushed a blue-backed court document across the table. It slid to a halt right in front of Ethan’s trembling fingers.

"You have zero claim to my assets," I said, my voice cutting through his crumbling sanity like a scalpel. "You have zero claim to my child. You walk out of here with nothing. Not a single penny. Not a single car. Not even the shirt on your back, which was paid for by my corporate card."

Agnes began to weep openly into her hands. "Ethan... what have you done to us? Oh God, what have you done?"

Ethan stared at the court order, his face contorting into an expression of pure, unadulterated madness. "You set me up from the very beginning. Your father set me up! You treated me like a pet! A placeholder!"

"My father gave you an opportunity to become a man of honor," I replied, feeling a sharp flutter of pain in my lower abdomen, which I carefully masked behind a mask of stone. "You chose to become a parasite. Marcus, remove them. If Ethan resists, the officers outside have full authority to use force."
