Chapter 3 - The Purge of the Sycophants

The silence inside the grand ballroom was so suffocating that the hum of the crystal chandeliers sounded like buzzing hornets. Six hundred people—titans of industry, hedge fund managers, socialites, and company directors—stood frozen in place, their gazes glued to me as I leaned slightly over the mahogany podium.
At my feet, the shards of Ethan’s celebratory champagne glass glittered under the spotlights. Next to them stood Vanessa, shaking violently in her custom silk gown, the diamond necklace Ethan had stolen from my family vault sparkling mockingly against her pale neck.
"Mr. Bradley," I said softly, the microphone amplifying my tone into a velvet whip that cracked through the room.
In the second row, Thomas Bradley, the Senior Vice President of Operations and Ethan’s fiercest ally, flinched as if he had been shot. Sweat dripped down his double chin, soaking the stiff collar of his tuxedo.
"E-Elena... Mrs. Vance," Bradley stammered, stepping forward with his hands raised placatingly. "You must understand... Ethan deceived all of us. He presented forged board authorizations. We had no idea—"
"Save your breath, Thomas," I interrupted, my voice devoid of warmth. Behind me, Samuel Ward, my chief legal counsel, opened a second leather binder and pulled out a stack of bank statements printed on forensic paper. "Ethan didn't forge anything alone. On the fourteenth of last month, three million dollars from our European logistics subsidiary were routed into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands under the name *T&B Holdings*. Care to guess whose initials those are?"
Bradley’s face drained of every drop of color. He looked wildly around the room, seeking help from colleagues who instantly looked away, turning their backs to avoid the splash zone of his destruction.
"You approved Ethan’s embezzlement, Thomas, in exchange for a twenty-percent kickback and the promise of the Chief Operating Officer title once I was permanently pushed out," I said, stepping out from behind the podium. My hand rested securely over my swollen belly. My baby shifted gently beneath my palm, calm despite the storm in the room. "The Metropolitan Police Department’s Financial Crimes Division is waiting in the lobby. Samuel, hand him his termination notice and the freeze injunction on all his Aurelia Group stock options."
"No! Elena, wait! We’ve known your family for thirty years! Your father—" Bradley lunged forward, but two stone-faced security officers intercepted him, clamping steel grips onto his shoulders and dragging him toward the back exit just as they had done with Ethan.
I didn't blink. I turned slowly, my eyes sweeping across the front row of board members who had raised their glasses to my humiliation only ten minutes earlier.
"Director Henderson. Director Chen. Director Miller," I called out their names like a roll call of the condemned. "I expect your signed letters of resignation on my desk by eight o'clock tomorrow morning. If they are not there, Samuel will release the forensic audits on your discretionary expense accounts to the IRS. Am I making myself entirely clear?"
The three older men lowered their heads in unison, visibly trembling. Not one dared to utter a word of defense.

Then, my eyes drifted to the stage floor where Vanessa had sunk onto her knees.
"Now," I murmured, stepping closer until the hem of my maternity gown brushed the hem of her designer dress. "What on earth are we going to do with you, Miss Miller?"
