Chapter 6 - The Flight of the Traitor

The silence in the underground armory was absolute, broken only by the steady drip of water from the concrete ceiling.
Vanessa stepped fully into the room, her elegant designer clothes replaced by a dark trench coat. She kept the suppressed pistol aimed squarely at my heart, her hand completely steady.
"Drop it, Emily," Vanessa repeated, her voice echoing off the concrete walls. "And slide it across the floor."
I clutched the silver locket tighter in my palm. The microfilm inside was the only thing that could save Harbor House and clear my father’s name.
"Vanessa, you're out of your mind," Michael said, stepping slowly between me and the barrel of her gun. "The police have already been notified. You can't shoot all three of us and expect to walk away."
Vanessa laughed—a sharp, brittle sound. "The police? Please. My father owns half the precinct. By the time anyone gets down here, the bulldozers will have collapsed the ceiling, and the three of you will be a tragic construction accident."
Luca hadn't moved. He stood beside me, his dark eyes locked onto Vanessa with the calculating intensity of an apex predator waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
"You're running," Luca stated calmly.
Vanessa’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second.
"You aren't dressed for a victory lap, Vanessa," Luca continued, his deep voice carrying a terrifying authority. "You’re wearing a travel coat. Your father doesn't know you’re down here, does he? He thinks you’re safely at the penthouse."
Vanessa’s jaw tightened. She reached into her coat pocket with her free hand to pull out a spare magazine, and as she did, a piece of paper fluttered to the floor.
It was a boarding pass.
First Class. Chicago to Geneva. Departure: 6:00 AM.
"You’re abandoning him," Michael realized, his eyes widening. "Victor is taking the fall for the eviction, and you're fleeing the country with the trust funds."
"My father is a dinosaur!" Vanessa snapped, her cool facade finally cracking into pure, desperate panic. "He thinks he can control the city with fear and blackmail. But the federal authorities have been auditing our accounts for months. This armory was his last cash reserve. I'm not going to spend the rest of my life in a federal prison because he got sloppy with an alcoholic and a maid!"
She cocked the pistol.
"Now give me the microfilm, Emily. I need it to access the offshore accounts. It’s the encryption key."
My blood ran cold. The ledger my father had hidden wasn't just a record of crimes; it contained the digital keys to the Bellini fortune. My father had literally locked away their empire.
"Do it, Emily," Luca murmured softly, his hand brushing against my lower back.
I looked at him, confused. Why would he surrender the evidence? But as our eyes met, I saw the subtle, almost imperceptible shift in his stance. His weight was perfectly balanced on the balls of his feet.
I slowly opened my hand and tossed the silver locket onto the concrete floor between us.
Vanessa’s eyes dropped to the jewelry for one critical, fatal second.
Luca moved with terrifying speed.
He didn't draw a weapon. He lunged forward, kicking a heavy wooden crate of ammunition directly into Vanessa’s knees.
The heavy box slammed into her legs with a sickening crunch. Vanessa screamed, her finger jerking on the trigger. The suppressed pistol fired wildly, a bullet sparking against the concrete inches from my face.
Before she could aim again, Michael tackled her to the ground, pinning her gun hand to the floor and twisting the weapon from her grip.
Vanessa thrashed and clawed, shrieking obscenities, but Michael held her down effortlessly.
"Get off me!" she screamed, her perfectly manicured nails scraping against the dirt.
Luca calmly walked over to the silver locket, picked it up, and handed it back to me.
"Are you alright?" he asked, his voice returning to its calm, commanding baseline.
"I'm fine," I breathed, my heart hammering against my ribs.
Luca looked down at his former fiancée. The woman he was supposed to marry just a few hours ago was now writhing on the floor of an illegal armory, exposed as a thief and a traitor.
"Your flight leaves in an hour, Vanessa," Luca said coldly. "You're going to miss it."
He pulled out his phone, dialing a number. "Marco. Bring the federal task force to Harbor House. Yes. We have the armory. And we have Vanessa Bellini."
Vanessa stopped struggling. She looked up at Luca, tears of genuine terror streaming down her face. "Luca, please. I loved you. I did. My father forced me into the engagement. I just wanted to survive."
Luca didn't flinch. "You tried to destroy my brother. You tried to ruin an innocent woman. You are exactly like your father."
He turned away from her, effectively erasing her from his life.
"We need to get above ground," Michael said, hauling Vanessa to her feet and securing her hands with a zip-tie from one of the crates. "It’s 5:30 AM. Victor’s bulldozers will be arriving soon, and when he realizes Vanessa isn't on that plane, he’s going to come looking for the money himself."
We hurried toward the heavy iron door leading to the Harbor House basement. Michael pushed it open, shoving Vanessa ahead of him.
The basement was dark, filled with old furniture and holiday decorations belonging to the widows. We climbed the wooden stairs to the main lobby.
When we pushed through the doors into the grand foyer of Harbor House, my heart stopped.
We were too late.
Standing in the center of the lobby, surrounded by terrified, weeping elderly residents in their pajamas, was Victor Bellini.

He was holding a signed demolition order. And standing behind him were six men armed with sledgehammers.
"Well, well," Victor smiled, turning to face us. "I was wondering where my daughter went."
