Chapter 11 - The Final Signature

I gasped, my hands flying to cover my mouth.

Luca looked up at me, his dark eyes shining with an absolute, unwavering devotion. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, dark velvet box. He flipped it open.

Inside rested a stunning, vintage diamond ring. It wasn't a flashy, modern monstrosity designed to show off wealth. It was an intricate, delicate heirloom, surrounded by a halo of sapphires.

"This was my grandmother’s ring," Luca said softly, his voice echoing in the quiet study. "She wore it when she arrived in this country with nothing but a suitcase and a promise to build a better life. I swore I would never give it to someone who didn't understand what that meant."

Tears spilled over my lashes, hot and fast.

"Emily Carter," Luca continued, his voice perfectly steady, entirely certain. "You brought light into a house that had been dark for a very long time. You gave my brother his dignity. You gave my mother's charity a future. And you gave me a reason to believe that I could be a good man."

He reached up, gently taking my trembling left hand in his.

"I don't want to run this empire without you," Luca whispered. "Will you marry me?"

"Yes," I sobbed, a profound, overwhelming joy bursting in my chest. "Yes, Luca. Of course I will."

He let out a ragged breath of pure relief, slipping the cool, heavy platinum band onto my finger. It fit perfectly.

Luca stood up and pulled me into his arms, lifting me completely off the floor. I buried my face in his neck, laughing and crying at the same time as he kissed my hair, my cheeks, and finally, my lips. The kiss was deep, passionate, and sealed with a promise of forever.

When he finally set me down, we were both breathless.

I looked down at the ring sparkling on my finger, then up at the silver fountain pen resting on his desk.

"We have one more thing to sign," Luca smiled, following my gaze.

He reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a fresh, official legal document. He laid it flat on the mahogany wood.

I leaned over to read the header.

The David Carter Memorial Wing — Harbor House Deed of Trust.

Luca picked up the silver fountain pen. "Michael and I decided this morning. The new medical wing at Harbor House is fully funded. It belongs to the residents in perpetuity. But it needs an official executor signature to be filed with the city tomorrow."

He held the pen out to me.

"It shouldn't be my name on this paper, Emily," Luca said quietly. "It should be yours."

I took the pen, my fingers tracing the cold silver. A year ago, I was terrified of losing my job. I was terrified of my mother’s medical bills. I was terrified of the wealthy, ruthless people who treated me like I was invisible.

Now, I was writing my father’s name into the history of the city, permanently protecting the vulnerable people he had died trying to save.

I leaned over the desk, the heavy sapphire and diamond ring sparkling on my left hand, and signed my name in smooth, midnight-blue ink.

Emily Carter.

"Beautiful," Luca murmured, pressing a kiss to the curve of my shoulder.

A sudden knock at the study doors interrupted us.

"Luca? Emily?" Michael’s voice called out from the hallway. "They’re asking for a speech downstairs. Mrs. Gable is threatening to take the microphone herself if you two don't hurry up."

Luca and I laughed, the sound bright and ringing in the beautiful, sunlit room.

"We're coming!" Luca called back.

He took my hand, lacing his fingers securely through mine. As we walked toward the heavy mahogany doors, I paused and looked back at the desk one last time.

The silver fountain pen rested next to the signed deed. My father’s sobriety coin sat safely in my pocket. And the man I loved was holding my hand, leading me toward a future I had never dared to dream of.

The shadows of the past were completely, permanently gone.

"Ready?" Luca asked, looking down at me with a smile that belonged only to me.

I squeezed his hand.

May you like

"I'm ready," I said.

And together, we opened the doors and walked out into the light.
