Chapter 6 - The Unbroken Home

Six months later.
The spring sun was brilliant and warm over my backyard. The oak trees were full of lush green leaves, and the air smelled of blooming jasmine and fresh-cut grass.
On the stone patio, a brand-new teak dining table sat surrounded by comfortable cushioned chairs.
In the center of the table sat a beautiful, two-tier homemade lemon cake, decorated with fresh yellow roses and delicate candied zest.
Evelyn sat in one of the teak chairs, wearing a sunhat, laughing as she poured fresh iced tea into crystal glasses. Beside her sat Mark, looking healthier, rested, and lighter than he had in years. He was currently working alongside Marcus to finalize the full financial restitution payout—over $250,000 recovered from the Voss family’s seized assets under the Elder Exploitation court ruling.
Vanessa’s brother had accepted a six-year federal prison sentence under a plea bargain, while Vanessa herself was currently serving three years of probation, performing community service, and paying monthly court-ordered restitution while living in a modest studio apartment across the state line.
My son had moved back into the city, taking a promotion at his architectural firm, and we spent every Sunday afternoon together in the house he had grown up in.
I blew out the single candle sitting atop the lemon cake, surrounded by the people who actually loved me.
“Happy sixty-fifth-and-a-half birthday, Arthur,” Evelyn smiled warmly, handing me a slice on a china plate.
I took the plate, looked down at the bright yellow cake, and then looked up at my son and my oldest friend.

The lemon cake had splattered on the pavers six months ago, but the foundation of our home remained as solid, beautiful, and unbroken as the day Martha and I first laid the bricks.
I took a bite, closed my eyes, and enjoyed the sweet, perfect taste of home.
