Chapter 4 - The Legal Counter-Attack

By Monday morning, the legal storm had broken wide open.

Marcus Vance, my long-time corporate attorney and close friend, sat across from me in my living room with a hot cup of coffee. Spread across the coffee table were formal court filings, bank subpoenas, and asset attachment orders.

Mark sat on the sofa beside me, looking exhausted but focused, holding a pen as he reviewed his own divorce petition documents.

“Vanessa’s brother, Gregory Voss, was arrested at his office in downtown Chicago late yesterday afternoon,” Marcus informed us, sliding a legal brief forward. “The county prosecutor’s office found that Prism Digital Holdings was a shell company used to launder unauthorized transfers from three other elderly victims across the state. Your eighty-four thousand dollars was just the tip of the iceberg.”

Mark shook his head in disbelief. “She wasn't just stealing from my dad... her whole family was running an elder financial exploitation scheme?”

“It appears so,” Marcus nodded grimly. “Vanessa’s role was to identify wealthy targets through family connections, gain access to digital banking credentials, and execute quiet transfers under the guise of 'family financial assistance.' She did it with her ex-fiancé three years ago, though he declined to press charges to avoid a public scandal.”

I took a slow sip of my coffee. “I won't be declining.”

“Good,” Marcus smiled grimly. “Because of the criminal indictments against her brother, we’ve successfully obtained an emergency freezing order on Vanessa’s personal accounts, as well as an immediate Lis Pendens attachment on her townhome lease. We’ve also filed for full financial restitution under the State Elder Exploitation Act, which carries treble damages.”

Just then, the doorbell chimed.

Mark stood up, walked to the front window, and looked through the blinds. His jaw tightened.

“It’s her mother,” Mark said, looking back at me. “Helen Voss.”

I stood up, adjusting my cardigan. “Let her in, Mark. It’s time we brought this entire family to a complete accounting.”
