Chapter 4 - The Awakening

Silence descended upon the boardroom—a heavy, suffocating silence where the only sound was the distant hum of the building’s HVAC system.

Trevor looked as though he had seen a ghost. His hands gripped the edges of the mahogany table so tightly his knuckles turned chalk-white.

“Nina... this is some kind of sick joke,” Trevor whispered, his voice cracking with panic as he looked around at the senior partners, desperately searching for someone to validate his denial. “She’s... she’s an accountant! We lived in a basement apartment together in Brooklyn! I used to buy her groceries when her freelance gigs fell through! She doesn't own Rossi Global!”

“Freelance gigs, Trevor?” I tilted my head, offering him a cold, razor-sharp smile. “Is that what you called my data-architecture consulting firm that quietly cleared two million dollars a year while you were failing your college finance exams?”

Arthur Ashford slammed both palms down on the table, glaring at the trembling young man beside him. “Trevor! What is the meaning of this?! You told my daughter that your ex-fiancée was a clinging, impoverished nobody from upstate New York who couldn't let go of the past!”

“I—I didn't know!” Trevor choked out, beads of sweat breaking out across his forehead. He looked up at me, his eyes pleading, stripped of all the arrogant laughter he had weaponized against me just twelve hours earlier. “Nina, please. We were together for four years. We built a life together! You can't do this over a... over a misunderstanding at a party!”

I straightened up, walking slowly around the table until I stopped right beside his chair. I looked down at him the exact same way Camille had looked down at me while pouring champagne over my head.

“A misunderstanding?” I asked softly. “When Camille poured a four-thousand-dollar bottle of wine over my dress and you laughed until your eyes watered, was that a misunderstanding, Trevor?”

Trevor swallowed hard, unable to meet my eyes. “We were drinking... we got carried away. Camille can be impulsive—”

“And you are cowardly,” I interrupted, my voice dropping an octave into a register of pure ice. “You traded four years of loyalty for a billionaire’s last name and a guaranteed partnership track at a failing firm. Well, congratulations on the partnership, Trevor. Because as of ninety seconds ago, Rossi Global has exercised its collateral option on Ashford & Sterling Capital.”

Arthur Ashford lunged forward in his seat. “You can't do that! That’s hostile asset seizure! We have legal recourse!”

“You have seventy-two million dollars in unsecured debt maturing at noon today, Arthur,” Marcus Vance chimed in calmly, sliding a second financial dossier across the table. “And since Rossi Global now holds ninety-one percent of your voting shares, your legal recourse consists of packing up your mahogany desk before the afternoon bell rings.”

The boardroom erupted into chaos. Senior partners began shouting over one another, papers were scattered across the floor, and Arthur Ashford collapsed back into his leather chair, clutching his chest as he realized his entire family dynasty had just vanished into thin air.

And Trevor?

Trevor sat frozen in his chair, staring at me as the horrifying truth finally settled into his bones:

The girl he had treated like garbage, the girl he had humiliated to impress his new high-society fiancée, was now the absolute master of his entire professional universe.
