Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Road

The drive back into the city was smooth, quiet, and filled with the kind of peace that money can't buy, even though money had finally given us the shield to protect it.

We didn't talk about Robert, or Denise, or Gregory, or the mansion in the suburbs where cold people had once sat around folding chairs laughing at a little girl in a $15 dress. That world was gone—dismantled, liquidated, and re-engineered from the ground up.

When we reached our penthouse, the afternoon sun was casting long, amber beams across the living room floor.

Emily dropped her keys on the entry table, kicked off her boots, and walked straight over to the piano near the window—an instrument we had bought together last year, when we finally had enough space to breathe and enough security to dream.

She sat down on the bench, lifted the fallboard, and began to play.

It wasn't a sad song. It wasn't an angry march or a bitter requiem. It was bright, melodic, and entirely her own—a song written by someone who had walked through the fire, looked the devil in the eye, and decided she was going to build her own kingdom instead.

I stood by the window, watching the traffic flow endlessly down the vibrant streets below us, knowing with absolute, unshakeable certainty that no one would ever make my daughter feel small again.

The box had been empty once.

Now, the world was wide open.
