Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

The panic that erupted in the ballroom was immediate and absolute.
Gregory lunged toward the podium, his face red with fury and terror. "You can't do this! You're a seventeen-year-old kid! This is illegal! This is malicious prosecution, or—or extortion!"
"It's business, Uncle Gregory," Emily replied, her tone completely devoid of emotion. She didn't flinch as he stopped two feet from her, towering over her with his fists clenched. "Every single commercial lease your firm holds contains a moral turpitude and corporate solvency clause. When Vance-Sterling audited your subsidiary accounts last month, we discovered that your firm had been systematically embezzling client escrow funds to cover your personal stock market losses. The federal indictments are being filed tomorrow morning."
Gregory staggered backward, bumping into a marble pillar, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. He looked at Robert, his voice cracking with desperation. "Robert! Tell your daughter to stop! She’s destroying our entire family! She’s destroying your brother!"
Robert slowly turned his head toward Emily, his eyes filled with a wretched mixture of shock, guilt, and a pathetic, pleading disbelief. "Emily... please. I know we weren't... I know we made mistakes when you were little. I should have stopped Denise that night. I know I should have stood up for you. But we're your family. You can't ruin your own flesh and blood over a childhood grudge."
Emily looked at her father for a long, silent moment. The silence stretched out, heavy and unbearable, until Robert's shoulders slumped under the weight of her gaze.
"Family," Emily repeated the word as if it were a foreign language she was trying to translate. "Where was my family when Denise called me a trash girl? Where was my family when you watched me pack my clothes into duffel bags on a freezing November night and drove away without offering us a dollar, a blanket, or a ride? You didn't consider me flesh and blood then, Robert. You considered us an embarrassment. A stain on your polished suburban image."
"I was weak!" Robert broke down, his voice cracking as a tear finally slipped down his cheek. "Denise runs this family, she controls the social standing—I was afraid of losing my job, my position—"
"And that," Emily said quietly, "is why you deserve everything that is about to happen to you."
She turned back to the audience, where dozens of wealthy uncles, aunts, and cousins were now frantically whispering into their smartphones, calling their lawyers, their banks, and their business partners as the reality of their impending financial ruin began to set in.

"The restructuring of Vance-Sterling is already complete," Emily announced, her voice ringing clear across the room. "By tomorrow afternoon, the commercial buildings you operate out of will be repossessed. The luxury vehicles leased under your corporate accounts will be towed. And the trust funds your parents left you—the ones managed by the family board—have already been frozen under federal investigation for tax evasion and fraudulent asset shielding."
Denise shrieked—a raw, animal sound of pure rage and despair—and lunged directly at Emily, her fingernails clawing through the air like a cornered animal.
