Chapter 6 - A Brand New Foundation

Six months later, the La Jolla coastline was bathed in the warm, brilliant light of a California summer.

Our home—the house Daniel and I had restored together—was filled with the sound of happy laughter, soft cooing, and the pitter-patter of tiny feet learning how to crawl across the pale oak floors.

There were no envelopes sealed with magnolia stickers. There were no lists detailing my failures. There were no toxic expectations dictating how a Whitmore wife was supposed to behave.

Instead, our home was built on something far more powerful: absolute truth, mutual respect, and an unbreakable love that had survived the hottest fire.

On a Saturday afternoon, I stood on the back patio holding six-month-old Clara in my arms as she giggled, reaching out to grab a floating soap bubble that drifted across the garden.

Daniel walked out of the kitchen carrying two glasses of iced lemonade, handing one to me before wrapping his arms around both of us from behind, resting his chin comfortably on my shoulder.

“Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Whitmore?” Daniel murmured, kissing my cheek.

I looked out past the white garden fence toward the sparkling blue expanse of the Pacific Ocean. The horizon stretched out wide, beautiful, and completely unobstructed.

“I was just thinking,” I smiled, turning my head to kiss his lips, “that I’m awfully glad I read the last page.”

Daniel laughed—a rich, warm, joyful sound—and pulled us both closer, ready to write every single chapter of our future together, exactly the way we chose.
