Chapter 5 - The Chicago Fashion Gala

One year later. October.
The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel in downtown Chicago was packed to absolute capacity for the annual Midwest Haute Couture Showcase—the premier fashion event of the year, attended by top international designers, retail buyers, and fashion journalists.
In previous years, Nicole had spent thousands of dollars buying tickets to sit in the secondary gallery, desperate to take photos for her social media pages.
Tonight, the center front-row table bore a silver nameplate: VANCE APPAREL GROUP — EXECUTIVE SUITE.
Sitting at the table were Grandma, wearing a stunning black velvet gown; me, wearing an elegant cream silk suit; and fourteen-year-old Emma, wearing a breathtaking floor-length navy blue gown featuring intricate gold hand-embroidery along the collar—an evolved, masterpiece version of the very dress she had sewn two years ago.
The lights in the grand hall dimmed.
The announcer's voice boomed over the high-powered speakers:
"Ladies and gentlemen, the recipient of the 2026 Young Designer Innovation Award, recognizing extraordinary craftsmanship and vision in sustainable apparel..."
A bright spotlight swung across the grand room, locking directly onto our table.
"...Emma Vance Carter!"
The entire auditorium erupted into a thunderous, standing ovation.
Emma looked at me, her eyes wide with amazed, joyful shock. I squeezed her hand tight, tears of soaring pride streaming down my cheeks, as Grandma kissed her cheek warmly.
"Go get your award, sweetheart," I whispered into her ear. "You earned every single stitch."
Emma stood up, smoothing her navy dress, and walked tall and proud up the stairs onto the grand stage.
Standing near the secondary service bar at the back of the room—wearing a plain black server uniform, holding a tray of empty champagne flutes—was Nicole.
She had taken a part-time catering shift at the hotel to make extra money for her rent.
Nicole stood frozen behind the tray, watching through the dark crowd as her fourteen-year-old "stinky niece" stood under the brilliant stage lights, accepting a gleaming crystal trophy while three hundred of the industry’s most powerful leaders cheered her name.
Emma accepted the trophy, stepped up to the microphone, and looked out over the crowd with a calm, radiant smile.
"I learned how to sew from my grandmother," Emma spoke into the mic, her clear, beautiful voice echoing across the silent hall. "And I learned how to be strong from my mother. They taught me that true elegance isn't something you buy with someone else's money. It's something you create with your own hands."

The crowd cheered louder, several senior designers wiping tears from their eyes.
At the back of the room, Nicole lowered her head, picked up her tray of dirty glasses, and walked quietly out through the service doors into the dark kitchen alley.
