Chapter 2 - The Shattered Illusion

The hall erupted into a chaotic, buzzing hum of hushed whispers and shocked gasps.
Nicole’s hands began to shake violently. She took two sharp steps toward Grandma, her polished aristocratic facade completely shattering into raw, hysterical panic.
"You're giving my company to a twelve-year-old?!" Nicole screamed, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "A child who sews rags in her bedroom?! What about my children?! What about Grant's investment positioning?!"
Grant, Nicole's husband, stepped forward, his face dark with fury. "Mrs. Vance, this is legally unconscionable! I have redirected two of my private equity clients toward your manufacturing expansion based on the guarantee that Nicole was taking over executive operations next year!"
"Then you made a very foolish financial promise, Grant," Grandma replied smoothly, handing the blue folder directly to me. "Because you forgot one fundamental truth: I own 85% of the primary equity. I built this company with my own sweat, not your promises."
My father took a heavy step toward me, his face contorted in a mixture of anger and humiliation. "Lauren! Tell your grandmother to stop this insanity! You know Emma can't run a multi-million-dollar apparel firm! This is going to ruin the family reputation!"
I stood straight, pulling Emma gently behind my side, my hand resting firmly on her shoulder.
For thirty years, I had swallowed my pride. I had accepted my parents' favoritism, watched them buy Nicole luxury cars while I worked two jobs through college, and stayed quiet while they made my daughter the punchline of their holiday dinners.
"Emma isn't running the company tonight, Dad," I said, my voice steady, calm, and ringing with a quiet authority I had never allowed myself to use before. "Grandma and I are. And for the next six years, every single dollar of company profit will go into expanding our actual manufacturing lines—not funding Nicole’s shopping trips to Paris."
"Lauren!" my mother shrieked, tears smearing her heavy makeup. "How can you be so selfish?! Nicole has three children in private school! How is she supposed to maintain her lifestyle?!"
"She can get a job, Mom," I replied flatly. "Just like I did."
Nicole let out an animalistic shriek of rage, lunging forward as if she wanted to grab the blue folder from my hands. But before she could take two steps, Grandma’s personal security chief, Marcus, stepped smoothly into her path, his broad frame blocking her completely.
"The celebration is over," Grandma announced to the room, taking Emma's other hand in hers. "And as for anyone who thinks a twelve-year-old girl making her own clothes is something to mock..."
Grandma looked around the room at our relatives, her eyes burning with absolute, unyielding authority.

"...you are no longer welcome in my showroom, my home, or my life."
Grandma turned on her heel, guiding Emma and me toward the grand glass doors of the hall, leaving my parents, my sister, and her husband standing in the center of the room while sixty of their wealthiest peers watched their parasitic empire crumble into dust.
