The Bell family estate—a sprawling five-acre mansion in the county’s most expensive subdivision—was surrounded by news vans, police cruisers, and state investigator vehicles.
At 3:00 PM, two uniformed state troopers guided Victor Bell down his front stone steps in steel handcuffs, his head bowed, his tailored jacket pulled over his wrists to hide the irons.
Behind him walked Chase, wearing plain jeans and a t-shirt, his face pale and streaked with tears, as a third officer guided him toward a separate patrol car on charges of Accessory to Corporate Fraud and Destruction of Evidence.
Brody and Tyler, the two boys who had laughed when Chase tore my daughter's letter, had spent the morning in the principal's office delivering full written statements regarding Chase's long history of theft, fuel-card misuse, and classroom intimidation in exchange for immunity from expulsion.
I stood across the street beside my silver SUV, wearing my comfortable work boots and a dark canvas jacket, holding a mug of black coffee.
As the officers guided Chase toward the rear door of the cruiser, his eyes caught mine across the asphalt.
