Chapter 1 - The Name on the Floor

The hallway air felt instantly ice-cold, suffocating, and thin.

Claire.

The name hung in the space between us like a physical object, jagged and impossible to breathe around. My younger sister. The aunt who held my kids when they were born, who came over for Sunday dinners, who had hugged me tight in our living room three months ago when we announced our fifth baby.

My stomach churned, a sharp wave of nausea hitting me so hard that I had to press one hand against the wall to keep my balance. Beneath my sweater, the baby kicked—a small, soft movement that felt like a painful reminder of everything Ryan had destroyed.

“Claire?” My voice was barely a whisper. It didn't sound like me. “You’re talking about my sister?”

Ryan didn't meet my eyes. He looked down at the hardwood floor, rubbing the back of his neck in that familiar, defensive gesture he used whenever he was caught in a minor lie. But this wasn't a minor lie. This was a nightmare.

“It wasn't supposed to happen,” Ryan stammered, his tone flat, almost detached. “We were just talking at first. About how overwhelmed things got around here. You were always tired, always busy with the kids, and she… she listened.”

“She listened?” A bitter, breathless laugh tore out of my throat. “She’s my sister, Ryan! She sat on our couch! She ate our food! She touched my stomach!”

“Don’t yell,” Ryan hissed, casting a quick, nervous glance toward the hallway leading to the back bedrooms, even though the older kids were still at school. “Look, we can figure this out. You’re pregnant, you’re emotional, and you’re exaggerating—”

“Exaggerating?!” The sheer audacity of his words hit me like a slap. “I heard you call me an idiot! I heard you tell her you loved her! I heard you plan your next hotel trip!”

Ryan stepped toward me, reaching out a hand as if to touch my shoulder. “It’s just an escape, okay? It doesn't mean I don't care about our family. You just need to be rational. Think about the kids. Think about the baby. Where are you going to go with five children?”

He thought he had me trapped. He looked at my pregnant belly, at my trembling hands, and calculated that my dependence on him would force me into silence. He thought my love for our family meant I would swallow the humiliation to keep his comfortable life intact.

Before I could answer, the front door clicked open.
