Chapter 6 - The Unbroken House

Three weeks later.
The chaos of the wedding fallout had finally settled into a quiet, permanent peace.
To save face publicly, the Mercer family didn't cancel the wedding entirely, but they stripped it down to a tiny, humiliating civil ceremony at the county courthouse with only immediate family present—no luxury ballroom, no high-society guests, and no open bar.
Vanessa was forced to sign a legally binding prenuptial agreement drafted by Arthur’s lawyers, ensuring she had zero access to family funds without direct corporate oversight.

On a quiet Sunday afternoon, Daniel and I sat on our back porch, sipping iced tea while watching Lily sleep peacefully in her stroller. The house was clean, smelling of fresh lavender and lemon, completely free of glitter, strangers, and deceit.
My phone buzzed on the patio table.
It was an alert from my bank:
WIRE TRANSFER RECEIVED: $4,700.00 FROM VANCE RETAIL CORP (RESTITUTION SETTLEMENT).
I looked at the screen, smiled, and turned the phone face down.
Daniel reached across the table, taking my hand in his. His fingers were warm, steady, and grounding.
"How does it feel?" Daniel asked softly, looking out at the green lawn and the blooming flowers.

I took a deep, refreshing breath of the autumn air, feeling the complete absence of weight on my shoulders.
"It feels," I smiled, squeezing his hand back, "like home."
