Chapter 4 - The Return of the Phantom

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan was a cathedral of ostentatious wealth. Crystal chandeliers dripped from the gilded ceilings, casting fractured light over hundreds of socialites, senators, and titans of industry.

It was the annual Moretti Foundation Charity Gala—the prelude to Vincent and Sophia’s weekend wedding.

Vincent stood near the center stage, a glass of vintage scotch untouched in his hand. He wore a custom Tom Ford tuxedo, but it hung slightly loose on his broad frame. His eyes were hollow, scanning the crowd with an air of profound detachment.

“Darling, smile,” Sophia purred beside him, sliding her hand into the crook of his elbow. She looked radiant in a champagne-colored backless gown, her hair swept up in diamond pins. “The reporters from *Bloomberg* and *Vogue* are watching. This night is about celebrating our future.”

Vincent didn't look at her. “The lead underwriter from Vance Capital hasn't arrived. If they don't sign the letter of intent tonight, Sophia, there is no future. Moretti Enterprises defaults on thirty million in municipal bonds by midnight.”

Sophia sighed with practiced impatience. “You worry too much. This Vance Capital is a European firm. They reached out to us, didn't they? They know you’re Vincent Moretti. No one refuses a partnership with your family.”

“You don't know the international markets,” Vincent snapped, his voice sharp with fatigue. “Vance Capital swallowed the de Medici holdings in Milan within forty-eight hours last month. They don't partner. They consume.”

Before Sophia could answer, the heavy double doors at the entrance of the ballroom swung open.

The chatter in the room didn't simply die down; it ceased entirely, like a candle snuffed out by a sudden gust of wind.

A woman walked into the hall.

She wore an emerald-green silk crepe gown that fell like liquid jade against her silhouette, high-necked and utterly backless, commanding attention without revealing an inch of vulgarity. Her jet-black hair was cut in a flawless, asymmetrical bob that framed high cheekbones and cold, sapphire-blue eyes. Around her neck sat a single piece of jewelry: the Bennett Star, a flawless eighty-carat sapphire that had vanished from public auction four years ago.

Behind her walked Daniel Reyes, dressed in an immaculate charcoal bespoke suit, his demeanor that of an elite general flanking a queen.

Vincent froze.

The glass of scotch slipped from his fingers, shattering against the marble floor. Amber liquid and shards of crystal splashed across Sophia’s designer heels, but Vincent didn't flinch. He didn't even breathe.

Color drained from his face until he looked like a corpse.

“Anna…?” he whispered, the sound strangled in his throat.

Sophia caught his arm, her fingernails digging through his sleeve. “Vincent! What is wrong with you? Look at the mess you—” She stopped. Her eyes followed his gaze, and an audible gasp escaped her throat. “No… that’s impossible. She’s dead. She died in the jet!”

I walked forward through the parting sea of billionaires, my heels clicking rhythmically against the stone. Heads turned. Whispers erupted like dry brush catching fire.

*“Is that… Anna Bennett?”*

*“The wife who died in the jet crash?”*

*“Look at her… she looks like royalty.”*

I stopped ten feet from where Vincent stood, flanked by Daniel. I allowed my gaze to drift lazily over Sophia, noting the terror flickering behind her carefully painted eyes, before settling on Vincent.

He took a stumbling step forward, his chest heaving, his trembling hand reaching out as if trying to touch an apparition.

“Anna… my God… Anna, you’re alive…” A ragged sob broke from his throat. “You survived…”

I looked at him with an expression of polite, mildly amused boredom.

“Mr. Moretti, please compose yourself,” I said. My voice was smooth, cool, and projected effortlessly across the silent room. “We are business partners, not acquaintances. You are making a scene.”

Vincent halted, his face twisting in agonizing confusion. “Business… partners? Anna, what are you talking about? It’s me! It’s Vincent! Your husband!”

I tilted my head, offering a razor-sharp, flawless smile.

“My name is Anna Vance, Managing Director of Vance Capital,” I said, extending a gloved hand toward him. “And I believe your board of directors scheduled a meeting with me tonight to discuss the liquidation of your family’s legacy.”
