Chapter 3 - The Fallout at Sterling Logistics

While we were settling into our new apartment, the shockwaves of Saturday morning’s kitchen disaster were tearing through the Whitmore family empire.

On Monday morning, Grant arrived at the executive offices of Sterling Logistics in downtown San Diego, looking like a man who hadn’t slept in a week. His tie was crooked, his eyes were bloodshot, and his hands trembled as he held his coffee cup.

He had hoped to bury his head in spreadsheets, avoid his mother, and figure out some way to salvage his career before the divorce filing hit the corporate legal department.

He didn't make it to his desk.

As he stepped off the elevator on the fourteenth floor, his mother’s longtime executive assistant, Brenda, intercepted him in the hallway.

“Mr. Whitmore,” Brenda said, her voice clipped and entirely devoid of the polite deference she had shown him for years. “Your mother wants to see you in her office immediately.”

Grant swallowed hard, smoothing his jacket. “Brenda, look, I can explain—”

“I don’t need explanations, Mr. Whitmore. Just go inside.”

Grant pushed open the heavy mahogany doors of the corner executive suite.

Patricia Whitmore—the untouchable queen of San Diego real estate and corporate logistics—did not look like an empress today. She sat behind her massive glass desk, looking older, smaller, and consumed by a terrifying, cold fury.

The door clicked shut behind Grant.

“Sit down, Grant,” Patricia commanded.

He slowly took a seat across from her. “Mom, I know you’re upset about what happened on Saturday—”

Bang!

Patricia slammed a thick manila folder onto the glass desktop.

“Upset?” she whispered, her voice shaking with restrained venom. “Upset doesn't even begin to cover it, Grant. Do you have any idea what you’ve done?”

Grant blinked. “I… I tried to protect my career—”

“Your career?!” she shouted, slamming her hand down again. “You hid an illegitimate child in my house! You made me—me!—treat my own bloodline like an unpaid servant! Do you know what the board of directors said when word leaked out this morning about the paternity and the domestic abuse allegations?”

Grant’s blood ran cold. “What… what did they say?”

“They voted unanimously an hour ago to suspend your VP contract pending an internal ethics review,” Patricia said, leaning forward, her eyes boring holes into his soul. “And that’s not all. Because of your gross negligence, moral turpitude, and the impending messy divorce, Sterling Logistics is pulling its commercial underwriting partnership from your division.”

“Mom, you can’t do that!” Grant panicked, standing up from his chair. “That division is my life’s work! Without Sterling backing, I’ll be demoted—I’ll lose everything!”

“You already lost everything, you pathetic excuse for a son,” Patricia spat, standing up to tower over him. “You thought you were clever, hiding your mistakes and playing the victim. But you didn't just ruin your marriage. You compromised the integrity of the Whitmore name. Security is downstairs waiting to escort you out of the building. Clean out your desk.”

Grant stood frozen in the center of the luxurious office where he had once felt invincible.

He opened his mouth to plead, but he saw the absolute, unforgiving finality in his mother’s eyes. There was no rescue coming. There was no family trust to bail him out. He had dug his own grave, and now he had to lie in it.
