Chapter 3 - The Media Storm

By Sunday evening, the incident at the Princeton Range had completely eclipsed the actual shooting competition.
Social media platforms were flooded with viral clips titled: “Arrogant Champion Humbles Herself in Front of Real Combat Sniper!” and “Three-Time Regional Winner Throws Gun at Janitor—Regrets It Instantly!”
Hashtags like #CaptainMaya and #SweepTheFloor trended globally on X and TikTok. Millions of viewers watched the high-definition footage of Vanessa throwing her custom Sig Sauer, Maya catching it effortlessly with one hand, and then drilling four consecutive bullseyes through the exact same hole.
Vanessa Cole’s sponsors didn't wait for Monday morning.
At 11:00 PM on Saturday, her primary sponsor—a multi-million-dollar tactical gear manufacturer called Apex Dynamics—released an official statement on their website:
"Apex Dynamics deeply regrets the unsportsmanlike, unprofessional, and disrespectful conduct displayed by Ms. Vanessa Cole during today’s regional exhibition. We pride ourselves on honoring those who serve, especially combat veterans. Effective immediately, we are terminating our endorsement contract with Ms. Cole and donating her remaining sponsorship fund to the Wounded Warrior Project in honor of Captain Maya Torres."
Within hours, three other major sponsors followed suit. Vanessa’s phone, which had previously rung constantly with interview requests and promotional offers, went dead silent.
When Vanessa arrived at her luxury apartment in downtown Manhattan late that night, she found her manager waiting in the lobby with a cardboard box filled with her promotional posters and marketing contracts.

“It’s over, Vanessa,” her manager said flatly, dropping the box onto the velvet sofa. “You didn't just lose a shooting match. You proved to the entire world that you’re a bully with zero class. Nobody in the industry will touch you now.”
Vanessa stared at the box, her face distorted with rage and humiliation. She had spent a decade building an empire of applause, trophies, and adulation, only to have it completely obliterated in four seconds by a twenty-two-year-old janitor in a gray work shirt.
