Chapter 6 - The Unbroken Horizon

Six months later.

The spring sun over California was brilliant, warm, and washed clean of the shadows of the past.

I sat in a comfortable rocking chair in the nursery of our home, holding my newborn daughter, Maya, cradled securely against my chest. She had tufts of soft dark hair, tiny button fingers, and a peaceful, rhythmic breathing pattern that made my heart swell with infinite love.

My mother walked into the nursery, carrying a small, beautifully knitted baby blanket. She sat down in the armchair beside me, smiling down at her granddaughter with shining eyes.

"She's so beautiful, Naomi," Mom whispered softly, gently stroking the baby's tiny cheek. "She has your strength."

"No, Mom," I smiled, looking up from my daughter to meet my mother's eyes. "She has our strength."

My phone buzzed on the side table. I glanced down at the screen. It was a calendar notification for a date I no longer feared, a memory I no longer carried with pain.

I calmly tapped the screen, swiped right, and deleted the notification forever.

I didn't need it.

I looked out the nursery window toward the bright, endless spring horizon, watching the California sun climb higher into a sky that was entirely, beautifully our own.
