Chapter 4 - The Confrontation at the Salon

By Tuesday afternoon, the corporate fallout had moved from the boardroom to the streets of downtown San Jose.
Brandon had been placed on indefinite administrative leave pending a federal financial audit, his corporate credit cards had been frozen, and his luxury sports car had been repossessed by the bank after his primary accounts were slapped with a court-ordered asset freeze.
Desperate, panicked, and cornered, Brandon and Brianna had retreated to where it all started: Brianna’s boutique hair salon on the trendy side of town.
I parked my sedan across the street from Studio B Hair & Design, sitting quietly behind the tinted windshield with a cup of black coffee, watching the front windows.
It didn't take long.
At 3:15 PM, the front door of the salon swung open. Brandon marched out onto the sidewalk, looking disheveled, wearing a wrinkled hoodie instead of his usual tailored suit. Brianna rushed out right behind him, shouting at the top of her lungs.
"What do you mean you don't have any money left?!" Brianna shrieked, grabbing his sleeve. "You promised me the LLC funds would cover my salon lease for the next year! My landlord is threatening eviction!"
"My accounts are frozen, Brianna!" Brandon yelled back, shaking her off. "My dad cut me off, the board locked my corporate keys, and my psycho ex-fiancée handed a federal compliance officer a complete audit of every penny we siphoned! We're ruined!"
I opened my car door, stepped out onto the pavement, and locked my sedan with a sharp beep.
I crossed the street, my low heels clicking rhythmically against the concrete, stepping into their line of sight just as Brandon turned around.
They both froze.
"Naomi," Brandon breathed, his voice dropping into a pathetic, desperate whine as he took a tentative step toward me. "Naomi, please... you have to listen to me. It was all Brianna's idea! She pressured me, she told me we needed extra cash for the wedding, I never wanted to hurt you—"
"You lying piece of trash!" Brianna shrieked, lunging at Brandon with her fingernails bared, clawing at his hoodie before he shoved her backward onto the pavement.
"Shut up, you idiot! If you hadn't posted those stupid texts on the cloud drive, none of this would have happened!" Brandon roared back.
I stood ten feet away, watching them tear each other apart with a profound, detached sense of closure. The people who had laughed in the bridal suite, who had mocked my mother's trauma, and who had plotted to steal my future were currently collapsing under the weight of their own greed.
"You don't need to fight, you two," I said smoothly, stepping closer.
They both snapped their heads toward me.
"What do you want, Naomi?" Brandon spat out, wiping blood from his lip where Brianna had scratched him.
"I want you to know two things," I said, keeping my voice calm and steady. "First, my mother’s hair is growing back. Slowly, but it's growing. And every single day she looks in the mirror, she remembers that she raised a daughter who didn't let a coward walk all over her."
I paused, letting the words sink in.
"And second?" Brianna snarled from the pavement, scrambling to her feet.
"Second," I smiled faintly, pulling a legal envelope out of my handbag and holding it up, "this is a formal notice of civil litigation for defamation, invasion of privacy, and intentional infliction of emotional distress, filed on behalf of my mother. Your salon lease, your equipment, and your personal savings are all named as collateral in the lawsuit."
Brianna’s jaw dropped. "You can't do that!"

"Try and stop me," I replied.
I turned my back on them, walking calmly back toward my car as their frantic, hysterical screaming echoed down the sunlit downtown sidewalk.
