Chapter 9 - THE RECORDING THAT DESTROYED THE BELANDI EMPIRE

Adrien returned to the estate without Celeste.

She had agreed to cooperate with federal investigators, but she refused to go home until the triplets were safe and the truth had been documented.

For the first time, Adrien did not argue.

He went directly to the nursery.

Evelyn sat on the rug while the children built a tower from wooden blocks. When Adrien entered, the boys stopped playing.

The little girl watched him carefully.

He knelt several feet away.

“I need to tell you something.”

The children didn't move.

“When you were little, I made a mistake. I believed someone who told me you were in danger. I allowed you to be taken somewhere frightening.”

His voice cracked.

“I should have checked. I should have protected you. I'm sorry.”

The oldest boy lowered his eyes.

Adrien didn't reach for him.

He didn't demand forgiveness.

He simply remained there, allowing the silence to exist without trying to force it to end.

After several minutes, the little girl crawled toward him.

She placed a wooden block in his palm.

It was a small gesture.

But Adrien accepted it as though she had handed him the world.

Evelyn watched from the floor.

Later, when the children were asleep, she found Adrien in the study listening to an audio file recovered from the cellar.

The recording was dated two years earlier.

Vittorio had been dead for three years, so the voice speaking on the recording belonged to Lucian.

Another voice belonged to Dr. Sloane.

And a third voice, faint but unmistakable, belonged to Daniel Cross.

They discussed the triplets' treatment, the forged death certificate, and the removal of documents from the estate.

Then Lucian said something that made Evelyn's blood run cold.

“If the children ever speak, they'll identify all of us.”

Sloane replied, “They barely remember what happened.”

“Then make sure they remember nothing.”

The recording ended with a metallic crash.

Adrien sat motionless.

“It's enough to establish conspiracy,” Evelyn said.

“Not enough to prove what happened to Celeste.”

“Then we find the rest.”

He looked at her.

“You should leave.”

She stared at him.

“Excuse me?”

“This family has destroyed everyone who came close to the truth. I won't let it destroy you.”

“You don't get to decide that for me.”

“I can have you moved somewhere safe.”

“And I can refuse.”

He rose from his chair.

“Evelyn—”

“No. You asked me to help your children. I did. Now you're trying to send me away because you're afraid of what happens next.”

“I'm afraid you'll be hurt.”

“So am I.”

Her voice softened.

“But fear isn't a reason to abandon people.”

Adrien looked at her for a long moment.

Then he sat down again.

“What do you suggest?”

“We stop treating this like a war you can win by yourself.”

The next morning, Adrien met with federal investigators, his attorney, and Celeste's legal representative.

He agreed to surrender the recovered records, disclose the family's financial transactions, and cooperate with an investigation into the illegal clinic network.

It was the most dangerous decision he had ever made.

The information could destroy his legitimate businesses. It could expose years of criminal activity and bring charges against people who had served him faithfully.

It could also send him to prison.

Lucian learned of the decision before noon.

He responded by releasing a carefully edited video to several news outlets.

In the footage, Adrien appeared to be ordering the children taken into the cellar.

The recording omitted the surrounding conversation.

Within an hour, the story was everywhere.

MAFIA HEIR ACCUSED OF LOCKING HIS OWN CHILDREN AWAY.

BELANDI FAMILY'S SILENT TRIPLETS AT CENTER OF SHOCKING INVESTIGATION.

WAITRESS LINKED TO CRIMINAL FAMILY'S PRIVATE AFFAIRS.

Evelyn's face appeared beside Adrien's.

Her employer suspended her pending an investigation into her connection with the Belandi family.

Her landlord received anonymous calls demanding that he evict her.

By evening, someone had posted her apartment address online.

Adrien ordered additional security around the estate.

Evelyn refused to hide.

Instead, she contacted a journalist she had met while working at the Grand Aurelia. The journalist agreed to review the original recording, provided the evidence could be independently authenticated.

Meanwhile, the triplets began drawing again.

This time, they drew a television.

Beside it stood a man holding a phone.

The little girl wrote three words.

HE CUT IT.

Evelyn showed the drawing to Adrien.

“The video was edited,” she said. “The children know something is missing.”

The oldest boy nodded.

He took a pencil and drew a second line beneath the picture.

Then he wrote a name.

MATTEO.

Adrien summoned his security chief.

Matteo arrived looking exhausted.

When Adrien asked about the recording, he denied knowing anything about the edit.

But Evelyn noticed the man's hands.

They were trembling.

“Matteo,” she said quietly, “did you make a copy of the original video?”

He looked at her.

Then he looked at Adrien.

Finally, he reached inside his jacket and removed a small encrypted drive.

“I kept it because I knew this day would come.”

Adrien stared at him.

“You knew?”

“I knew your brother was preparing something. I didn't know how far he would go.”

The drive contained the unedited footage.

It showed Adrien giving an order, followed by Lucian directing the staff to take the children downstairs. But it also revealed a crucial detail: Adrien returned minutes later and demanded the children be brought back.

Lucian refused.

A struggle followed.

The recording captured Adrien shouting, “Open the door!”

Then Lucian's voice:

“It's too late. They already know.”

The footage ended with Adrien forcing his way into the cellar.

The video didn't absolve him of his initial mistake.

But it proved that he had tried to correct it—and that Lucian had deliberately concealed the truth.

The journalist published the complete recording that evening.

Within hours, public opinion shifted.

Investigators secured warrants for Lucian's financial records, Daniel Cross's communications, and the private clinic network.

But Lucian had already disappeared.

Before leaving, he sent Adrien one final message.

If I go down, everyone goes down. Including the waitress.

Attached was a photograph of Evelyn leaving the estate.

Behind her, reflected in the window of a parked car, stood a man holding a black umbrella.

May you like

He had been watching her for days.

And he was now standing outside the nursery.
