Chapter 4 - Blood and Shadows

The public backlash was swift and brutal.

By the third day, the paparazzi had established an impenetrable perimeter around the main entrance of the Grand Romano. Every time I stepped near the ground floor, flashes went off through the tinted glass. Social media was ablaze with the hashtag #RomanoScandal, with lifestyle influencers and gossip columnists dissecting my background, my modest family history, and my sudden elevation to the penthouse floor.

Yet inside the hotel, Donna Elena’s suite remained an oasis of unshakeable calm.

"Tea, Nora?" Elena asked, gesturing to the silver pot sitting between us on the sunlit terrace of her private quarters.

"Allow me, Donna Elena," I smiled, stepping forward to pour the fragrant jasmine blend into her fine bone china cup.

Over the past seventy-two hours, my duties had shifted from domestic labor to an intense crash-course in the inner workings of the Romano dynasty. Elena was not merely a retired matriarch; she possessed an encyclopedic memory of the hotel’s historical contracts, shareholder agreements, and political alliances. And more importantly, she treated me not as a servant, but as a student.

"You have an extraordinary eye for detail, child," Elena observed, watching me double-check the seal on an imported fruit crate before setting it on the table.

"When you clean thirty rooms a day, ma'am, you notice when a single coaster is moved three inches to the left," I replied. "Disorder has a pattern."

"Indeed it does," Elena sighed, her gaze drifting toward the city below. "And that pattern is tightening around us. The emergency board meeting is scheduled for tomorrow morning. Celeste's father, Arthur Varrone, has called for a vote of no confidence against Daniel."

"Can they do that?"

"If they prove Daniel is mismanaging company assets by prioritizing personal scandals—and if they convince the board that my voting power is nullified by medical incapacity—yes," Elena said, her eyes darkening. "Arthur has already bribed two major institutional investors. If Daniel loses tomorrow, the Grand Romano will be sold for parts."

At that moment, the door to the terrace swung open, and Daniel entered.

He looked exhausted. The dark circles under his eyes betrayed the sleepless nights he had spent in emergency meetings with overseas creditors. Yet the moment his eyes landed on me, the tension in his shoulders visibly lessened.

"The press is getting bolder," Daniel said, walking over and resting a hand on the back of his grandmother’s chair. "Arthur Varrone just released a statement claiming he has medical affidavits proving Grandmother is suffering from advanced vascular dementia."

"He bought a doctor in Zurich," Elena spat with sudden venom. "Dr. Weber. Arthur must have paid him a fortune to forge those records."

"We can't prove the forgery before tomorrow morning's ten o'clock meeting," Daniel admitted, his voice tight. "The Swiss regulatory board operates too slowly."

I stood silently, my mind racing through the fragments of information I had gathered over the past few days. Suddenly, a memory from my time on the service floor clicked into place.

"Daniel," I spoke up, breaking their conversation.

Daniel looked at me immediately. "What is it, Nora?"

"Two weeks ago, before the gala, I was assigned to clean the VIP hospitality lounge on the third floor," I said, step by step reconstructing the memory. "Paulson specifically ordered me not to enter the private conference room until midnight. But around eleven, I had to empty the hallway linen chute. I saw Arthur Varrone leaving that room."

Daniel’s eyes narrowed. "Arthur rarely visits the hotel personally."

"He wasn't alone," I continued, my heart beating faster. "He was with someone from inside the building. A man wearing a bespoke navy suit with gold cufflinks shaped like anchors."

Daniel went entirely rigid. "Gold anchors?"

"Yes. I remember because one of the cufflinks had fallen off near the corridor baseboard. I picked it up and placed it on the lost-and-found tray in the executive lounge."

"Julian Sterling," Donna Elena whispered, her voice dropping into an icy register. "The Chief Financial Officer. My late husband gave him those cufflinks on his twenty-fifth anniversary with the company."

Daniel pulled out his phone, his fingers flying across the screen. "Sterling controls the internal server logs and the offshore transfer authorizations. If Sterling is in league with Varrone, they didn't just forge medical records—they've been embezzling funds to artificially depress the hotel’s quarterly margins to justify the takeover!"

"Can you access Sterling’s computer?" I asked.

"Not remotely," Daniel said, shaking his head. "His terminal in the sub-basement financial vault uses a dual-key physical authentication system. One key is around his neck. The other is locked inside the safe in the executive suite."

"I know where the master override for the ventilation service shafts are," I said quietly.

Daniel stopped, staring at me in disbelief. "Nora, no. That vault is protected by motion sensors and armed private guards."

"The guards change shifts at three in the morning," I said, my voice steady, filled with an unshakeable conviction. "And the ventilation ducts leading from the laundry dry-cleaning vents drop right behind the secondary power breaker. I used to clean the exhaust filters there twice a month. The motion sensors don't activate if the auxiliary maintenance lights are on, because the night maintenance crew works on the water pumps."

Elena looked at Daniel, her eyes blazing with raw admiration. "She just handed you the keys to their kingdom, Daniel."

Daniel looked down at me, his gaze fierce, conflicted. He stepped close, his hand rising to gently touch my cheek, his thumb brushing against my cheekbone. The heat of his touch sent an electric shock straight through my chest.

"I will not let you risk your life for this family again, Nora," he whispered, his voice thick with an emotion he could no longer hide. "If you are caught down there, they will frame you for corporate espionage. Celeste will make sure you spend ten years in prison."

I lifted my hand and placed it over his, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his pulse beneath his skin.

"They already called me a thief, Daniel," I said softly, holding his gaze. "Let’s make sure I steal the one thing that will destroy them."
