Chapter 5 - The Unraveling Veil

Gasp after gasp tore through the congregation. Cell phones began slipping out of pockets, camera shutters clicking in hushed hysteria. Society matrons leaned forward, eyes wide, while corporate directors stared in horror.

"That's an outrage!" Richard bellowed, his voice cracking with rage. "Security! Get this woman out of here! She’s having an episode!"

"Nobody touches my mother," Julian roared, his hand shooting up, commanding every security guard at the perimeter to stay where they stood. His gaze burned into Victoria. "Answer the question, Victoria. Did you lay your hands on her?"

Victoria began to cry, but they were not tears of remorse—they were the ugly, suffocating tears of someone whose cage was slamming shut. "Julian, she insulted me! She came into the dressing room, throwing accusations, calling me a thief! She tried to rip my bouquet away—I only pushed her away in self-defense!"

"Self-defense?" I said, unzipping my beaded purse.

I pulled out my phone and tapped the screen, raising it toward the wireless microphone stationed at the lectern.

The speakers buzzed, and then Victoria’s voice—screeching, arrogant, entirely devoid of the breathy charm she presented in public—blared through the cathedral sound system:

*‘You pathetic old hag! You think Julian is ever going to believe you over me? By tomorrow morning, every dime from the bridge tender will be sitting in my offshore trust, and you’ll be rotting in an assisted living facility where you belong! Sign the transfer release, or I’ll ensure Julian never speaks to you again!’*

Then came the sickening, wet sound of a palm striking flesh, followed by my sharp intake of breath.

The silence that followed the recording was heavier than lead.

Victoria dropped her bouquet. The pristine white roses rolled down the altar steps, scattering petals across the stone floor. She looked at the phone in my hand, then at the horror and disgust etched across Julian’s face.

"Julian..." she whimpered, her hands trembling as she reached for him. "Julian, please... my father had debts... they were going to ruin our family... I had no choice..."
