Chapter 47 - The Blue Lights in the Gap

The stand-off hung on a knife-edge for three excruciating minutes. The rain poured down between the two factions, steam rising from the dead truck engine, the halogen beams trembling in the hands of men who had suddenly realized that an eviction of an old widow had turned into a frontier engagement against people with nothing left to lose.
Then, from the ridge road half a mile to the south, the low, wailing warble of a siren pierced the storm.
Through the gaps in the timber, red and blue lights strobed against the low-hanging cloud deck. Not one cruiser, but four, their high beams sweeping across the hillside as they turned off the county highway and began the ascent up our private road.
"The deputies..." Bradley wheezed, lowering his arm, a triumphant, snarl-like grin returning to his muddy face. "You’re done, Carmen! You fired on licensed security personnel! You’re going to die in a state cell, you and your whole degenerate family!"
"Those aren't county deputies, Bradley," Daniel said calmly, not lowering the Winchester an inch. "Look at the light bar. Blue and red split with amber in the center. The county only uses red and blue."
The first vehicle to crest the rise and slide to a halt behind Bradley’s disabled truck was a heavy, slate-gray Dodge Ram with the crest of the United States Marshals Service painted on the door. Behind it were two cruisers from the State Attorney General’s Special Investigation Unit.
Four men in tactical gear with yellow lettering across their chests stepped out, weapons drawn, but their attention was not directed at the vault.
"Federal agents! Drop your weapons! Bradley Julian, place your hands on your head and drop to your knees immediately!"
Bradley spun around, his mouth agape, the megaphone slipping from his fingers and clattering into the mud. "Wait! You have this wrong! I’m the landowner of record! I have the court order from Judge Miller!"
An agent stepped forward—a tall, square-jawed woman with a badge pinned to her tactical vest—and kicked Bradley’s legs out from under him, driving him face-first into the clay before pinning his hands behind his back with plastic zip-ties.
"Judge Miller was arrested two hours ago in Helena, Mr. Julian," the agent said, her voice clear and unaffected by the storm. "Your brokerage’s offshore accounts in the Caymans were frozen at midnight. And we have four warrants for mail fraud, bank fraud, wire fraud, and the unlawful seizure of federal land patents."

She then turned her head toward the stone vault where Thomas, Daniel, and I were standing in the shadows.
"Mrs. Blackwood?" she called out, her voice softening slightly. "My name is Special Agent Miller. Not related to the judge, thank God. We received the courier package your late husband deposited with the regional inspector forty-eight hours before he passed away. We’ve been waiting for this wall to come down for twenty years."
