Chapter 6 - The Smear Campaign

The next morning, the war spilled into the public eye.

I woke up at six in Maya’s guest apartment to the sound of my phone buzzing continuously.

When I opened social media, the headlines were already exploding across local lifestyle blogs and high-society tabloids.

*“SHOCKING BETRAYAL: Cinderella Bride Attacks Whitmore Heir on Morning After Wedding!”*

*“Gold-Digger Physical Therapist Flees 10-Million-Dollar Connecticut Estate After Violent Outburst.”*

The articles featured an unflattering, cropped photo of me walking out of the mansion, paired with a photo of Daniel looking somber, wearing an arm sling, standing beside a visibly tearful Patricia on the lawn of their estate.

Patricia had issued a formal statement to the press:

> *"Our family opened our hearts and our home to Miss Emily Vance. Tragically, it has become clear that she entered this sacred union under false pretenses, seeking only financial leverage over our family’s historic estate. When my son Daniel discovered her deceptive accounting practices regarding her clinic, she lashed out violently, causing him severe bodily injury. We are praying for her mental rehabilitation, but we must protect our family legacy."*

The comment sections were brutal. Hundreds of strangers were branding me a violent grifter, an opportunist, and a social climber.

"They're trying to destroy your credibility before the gala," Maya said, walking into the kitchen and setting down a cup of black coffee. "If the public believes you're an unstable, violent gold-digger, any claim you make about forged documents will look like a desperate retaliation."

"Let them talk," I said calmly, taking a sip of the coffee. "The higher they build the pedestal, the harder they hit the floor."

"What's the plan for the video from the clinic?" Maya asked.

"Hold it," I instructed. "If we release the footage of Gregory and the guards now, Patricia will cancel the gala and go into hiding. She will claim legal privilege and let her PR team handle it. I don't want her hiding behind lawyers."

"You want her in the spotlight," Maya realized, her eyes widening.

"I want her on the stage," I said. "With the microphones turned on, the investors watching, and the television cameras rolling."

At noon, Marcus Vance called.

"The federal judge signed the emergency subpoena duces tecum, Emily," Marcus said, his voice crackling with professional excitement. "We have authorized federal marshals to audit the notary log of Arthur Hayes. And guess what we found?"

"Tell me."

"Arthur didn't just forge your signature on the Montauk deed," Marcus said. "Three years ago, he forged the transfer of Daniel’s late aunt’s inheritance to Patricia. He has a systematic record of executing fraudulent powers of attorney for the Whitmore family dating back a decade. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District has just opened a formal grand jury investigation."

"Will they arrest them today?"

"No," Marcus replied. "The feds want the whole network. They are waiting for Patricia to present the Montauk asset prospectus at the gala tonight. The moment she signs the bank commitment letter on stage, the wire fraud is officially executed. That is when the trap springs."

"Then tonight," I said, "we give them the show of their lives."
