Chapter 6 - The Tarmac at JFK

The winter rain beat against the terminal glass of John F. Kennedy International Airport like a barrage of small stones.
Garrick Miller sat in the First Class lounge of Terminal 4, his foot tapping an erratic, frantic rhythm against the carpet. He kept glancing at the departure screens. Flight 742 to George Town was scheduled to board in twenty minutes.
In his designer leather briefcase was his passport, two burner phones, and the cryptographic key fobs for the Cayman bank accounts. He believed—in his childish, arrogant delusion—that if he could physically arrive on the island, he could bribe a local fiduciary to route the funds through a Swiss intermediary before the American injunction caught up with him.
Beside him sat his wife, Vanessa, clad in an oversized mink coat, her face buried in her designer scarf.
“Garrick, this is crazy,” Vanessa hissed, her eyes darting nervously around the lounge. “The police were at our house in Main Line this morning. My sister called me. They had search warrants!”
“Shut up, Vanessa!” Garrick snarled under his breath. “The feds can’t touch us once we land in Grand Cayman. I set up the residency papers three months ago. We have eleven million dollars waiting for us. We’ll live like royalty. Let Clara have that stupid suburban house. Let Mom deal with the lawyers.”
Vanessa stared at him, horror dawning on her features. “You’re leaving your own mother behind? She’s at a cheap motel!”
“Mom is seventy-four! What are they going to do, put her in federal prison? She’ll get probation! I’m the one they want! Now keep your mouth shut and drink your champagne!”
*“Attention passengers on Flight 742 to Grand Cayman, we are now beginning pre-boarding at Gate B22.”*
Garrick grinned, a rush of pure adrenaline surging through his veins. “Let’s go. We made it.”
He grabbed his briefcase, took Vanessa’s arm, and strode toward the boarding door. He handed his boarding pass to the gate agent. The scanner beeped.
A red light flashed on the screen.
The gate agent frowned. “Sir, please step aside for just a moment. There’s a system flag on your itinerary.”
“What system flag? That’s impossible, I’m First Class!” Garrick barked, stepping forward aggressively. “Scan it again!”
“Mr. Garrick Miller?”
A deep, quiet voice spoke from behind him.
Garrick froze.
Standing behind him were four men in crisp, dark suits. Two wore the gold badges of United States Marshals; the other two were special agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Financial Crimes Division.
“Step away from the gate, Mr. Miller,” the lead Marshal said, placing a heavy hand on Garrick’s shoulder.
Garrick ripped his arm away, his face turning purple. “Don't touch me! Do you know who I am? I have a flight to catch! This is illegal harassment!”
In one fluid motion, the Marshal twisted Garrick’s arm behind his back, slamming him chest-first against the concrete pillar beside the gate. The designer briefcase clattered to the floor, bursting open, spilling passport documents and account fobs across the linoleum.
Passengers gasped. Phones came out, recording the entire incident.
“Garrick Miller, you are under arrest pursuant to a federal warrant issued by the Eastern District of Pennsylvania,” the agent recited calmly, ratcheting cold steel handcuffs around Garrick’s wrists. “You are charged with wire fraud, identity theft, interstate transportation of stolen property, and conspiracy to commit elder financial abuse.”
“Vanessa! Call Marcus! Call my lawyer!” Garrick screamed, thrashing against the agent's grip as his face was pressed against the glass. “Clara! This is Clara’s fault! She set me up!”
Vanessa took three steps back, looked at her husband being pinned like a common criminal, and then looked at the FBI agent standing beside her.
“I have the passwords,” Vanessa blurted out, her voice trembling, tears streaming down her makeup. “I didn't do this. He forced me. I have all the offshore account records in my cloud storage. Just don't arrest me! I will cooperate!”
Garrick’s eyes widened in sheer, agonizing disbelief. “Vanessa?! You traitorous bitch!”
“Shut your mouth, Garrick,” she sobbed. “You were going to leave your mother to rot. I’m not going to prison for you.”
As Garrick was dragged down the terminal corridor in handcuffs, surrounded by flashing cameras and whispering travelers, he finally understood the weight of what he had done.

The game was over.
